Letter from Mary Rush Manners, daughter, and grand-daughter of two Signers of the Declaration of Independence, sister of a Presidential hopeful – married to an impoverished British officer who fought the Americans in the War of 1812.
"… it gave me the greatest pleasure to hear of your health and happiness, your account of the comfortable stones [anthracite coal?] now in use in Philadelphia … a striking contrast to the miseries we were enduring from cold at the time your letter arrived which found us seated almost in a good fire, and shivering from cold which it was not possible for coals placed in a large grate to defend us from. We have had one of the most sever winters ever experienced in England; I never in any country suffered so much indeed we have all suffered greatly from cold and rheumatism. Major… Read More

Messrs Duncan & Harrison of this place called on me this morning with a rude sketch of a draw-bridge and requested my consent to building such a bridge in the tow path bank in front of a new warehouse they have built in this Town on the Towing path side of the canal. I objected to such a bridge being built in the Tow path on the ground that there would be a great liability in such a bridge obstructing other boat teams when from carelessness or any other cause it would be left hoisted – They however say they will ask only the privilege of putting the bridge up as soon as it can be pronounced an obstruction they will forthwith remove it. I still objected but proposed to them to refer the matter to your better judgment, which I hereby do.
Please write as soon as you can.

Description:
McDaniel writes her cousin describing her journey via river steamboat to Tennessee where she became a teacher at the Clarksville Academy:
"My dear cousin,
… we prolonged our trip by going up to Cincinnati, instead of proceeding immediately homeward we took passage on a fine boat at St. Louis, and as she was going directly to the above place, we concluded to keep on up the Ohio. The boat was very much crowded, but we had quite a pleasant trip. The boat stopped at all the little, as well as large places, so we had an opportunity of seeing everything, when we arrived at Louisville we found the river so low that it was impossible for the boat to pass over the falls (which are just below the city) and the canal, from the rise and subsequent fall of the river, was full of sand, so that we had to wait all day for it to be cleaned out. We took a hack and went through the city, and spent the time pleasantly, in looking round, at all the curiosities, we visited a handsome greenhouse, where flowers are raised… Read More

1864 Future Philadelphia Mayor's rare imprint supporting Lincoln's Republican Party candidates in the coming election.
The questions to be decided at the approaching elections are of graver import than any which have ever heretofore been submitted to a popular decision. They involve not only the welfare, the prosperity and character of the people of the United States, but also, the personal interest of each individual citizen. If the nominee of the Chicago convention [Democrat George McClellan] should be successful, no sane man can doubt that along with the base surrender of our national integrity to the traitors now in arms against the Union, there would come public and private calamity in the worst forms in which they can be manifested. Our great industrial establishments would be closed for want of occupation; the produce of our farms would waste in our granaries for want of consumers; labor would… Read More

The archive chronicles the dysfunctional relationship between Merritt and his father and David Merritt's attempts to communicate with his father seeking acknowledgement, acceptance, and his father's respect. The letters become almost desperate, verging on belligerent, and are often accompanied by documents which Merritt has fashioned with elaborate calligraphy and handmade seals and other illustrations to resemble "official" certificates. Merritt's father never answered his son's letters.Dr. David Merritt (1830-1888)

My dear Sir,

Your favor of the 10th Inst was duly recd. You state that you were commissioned in vacation on the 1st July 1839 and that your commission ran according to the constitution to the end of the next session of the Senate that your 2d commission is dated the 20th March 1840, but that in the body of it, it says to have and to hold &c for the term of ten years from the 22nd January 1840. This last date is most probably the day on which the Senate advised and consented to your appointment.
