Description:
London: Macmillan, 1976. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14.5cm, × + 186pp. Signed and dedicated by J M Craster to historian, author and anthologist Ann Powell. To many, the First World War conjures up exclusively a picture of trench warfare, in which the armies of both sides remained locked in the mud and despair of their static positions. The war of movement with which the conflict opened and closed is less well remembered. This book, originally published in 1976, is an attempt to correct that situation, by providing a detailed daily account of the actions of one of the finest of the battalions of the original British Expeditionary Force that crossed over to France in the summer of 1914, the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards - The Models. The story is told in the words of the officers of the Battalion, few of whom survived the war, taken from their diaries and letters, and covers all the major actions of the first five months… Read More

London: Sidgwick and Jackson, 2000. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good Plus. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 15.5cm, 331pp. Signed and dedicated by Guy Patton to the ffep. A book in the tradition of 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' that links the Roman sack of Jerusalem in AD70, the sudden wealth of a priest in Rennes le Chateau in the 1800s, Hitler's SS, and the body of an Italian banker found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in the 1980s. Legend has long suggested that the treasure of the Jews was, following the Visigoth sack of Rome, brought to France. The Middle Ages' and Renaissance profusion of 'secret societies' - ranging from the crusading Knights Templar to the forerunners of today's freemasons - may have been established to protect this hidden wealth. It has remained a magnet for power seekers throughout history and seems to be the key to many mysteries: Rennes le Chateau, the origins of Nazi gold, the Vatican bank… Read More

Manchester: Carcanet, 1992. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14cm, 180pp. This is the compelling tale of the narrator's search for Lucy R., the young Scottish governess briefly described in Freud's Five Studies in Hysteria, in Vienna. Cecily Mackworth went to Vienna to uncover the identity of Lucy, but found that no records survived the great fire of 1845. Mackworth trudges through bourgeois Vienna, imagining Lucy and her life as well as exploring her own memories of the ruined city she had visited as journalist forty years earlier. Condition: The book is in very good condition, the dustwrapper is sunned to the edges but otherwise good. It has not been price-clipped.

Description:
Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, 2013. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Assumed first UK language edition. Hardback, bound in laminate boards as issued. 24 × 15.5cm, 415pp. This book was written originally as Rev. M. Deselaers' dissertation at the Papal Theological Academy of Krakow, Poland, with the title "God and Evil with Regards to the Life and Testimonies of Rudolf Höss, Commander of Auschwitz", and by the structure of its origin constituted a German-Polish bridge-building endeavor. It represents the fruit of the author's desire, as a German "after Auschwitz", to engage in peace work. Through his work and study he tries to participate in a living conversation, understand, together with those directly connected with "Auschwitz", how such a thing could possibly happen, and contribute to building a more peaceful future. The first part attempts to describe historical facts and covers the broad spectrum of the biography. This part refrains from… Read More

Description:
Newcastle upon Tyne: Northumbria University Gallery, 2010. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First edition, first printing. Paperback in wraps. 23.5 × 19.5cm, 160pp. Norman Cornish (1919-2014) set himself the task of recording what it was like to live in Spennymoor, a small mining town in north east England in the middle of the 20th century. He had little interest in anywhere else and the focus of his gaze has been sharp, true and unblinking. At the age of fourteen he began his working life as a miner at the Dean and Chapter Colliery and at sixteen he joined the Spennymoor Sketching Club, that enlightened educational and cultural project of the late 1930's that enabled a rich broadening of his artistic horizons. On his tutor Bill Farrell's advice, that he could do no better than paint the life he knew, he chronicled an entire way of life. Without diminishing the harsh realities of life and work, his paintings create a sense of time and place by depicting the lyrical qualities of his… Read More

Description:
New York: Abrams, 2002. First Edition, Later Printing. . Paperback. Very Good. First edition, later printing. Paperback. 28 × 23cm, 208pp. We recognize the artistry of Mona Lisa's elusive smile, but is there an underlying science? In this groundbreaking study, Harvard neurobiologist Margaret Livingstone explains how vision works. She tells us how great painters fool the brain: why Mona Lisa's smile seems so mysterious, Monet's Poppy Field appears to sway in the breeze, Mondrian's Broadway Boogie Woogie blinks like the lights of Times Square, and Warhol's Electric Chair pulses with current. Drawing on history and her own cutting-edge discoveries, Livingstone offers intriguing insights, from explanations of common optical illusions to speculations on the correlation of learning disabilities with artistic skill. Her lucid, accessible theories are illustrated throughout with fine art and clear diagrams. Condition: The book is in very good condition, with some light wear to the… Read More

Aldershot: Lund Humphries, 2007. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Good Plus. First edition. Large hardback in dustwrapper. 30.5 × 23cm, xi + 595pp. The collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, contains almost 200 drawings from the years in which Vincent Van Gogh worked in the south of France: Arles, Saint-Remy and Auvers-sur-Oise. These are catalogued here in one extensive volume, which forms the largest and final part of the complete catalogue of Van Gogh drawings in the Van Gogh Museum's collections. In February 1888, Van Gogh settled in Arles, where he was extraordinarily productive, but sold no pictures, was in poverty and suffered recurrent nervous crises with hallucinations and depression. In May 1889 he went at his own request into an asylum at St Remy, near Arles, but continued during the year he spent there to produce delirious paintings and drawings. In 1889 Vincent's brother Theo married and in May 1890 Vincent moved to Auvers-sur-Oise to be near him. There followed… Read More

Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1992. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First US edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14cm, 214pp. Signed without dedication to the ffep by Angela Livingstone. Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941) was one of the four great Russian poets of the 20th century, along with Akhmatova, Mandelstam and Pasternak. She also wrote outstanding prose. Endowed with 'phenomenally heightened linguistic sensitivity' (Joseph Brodsky), Tsvetaeva was primarily concerned with the nature of poetic creation and what it means to be a poet. Among the most exciting of all explorations of this theme are the essays 'Art in the Light of Conscience', her spirited defence of poetry; 'The Poet on the Critic', which earned her the enmity of many; and 'The Poet and Time', the key to understanding her work. Her richly diverse essays provide incomparable insights into poetry, the poetic process, and what it means to be a poet. This book includes, among… Read More
