Description:
Rio de Janeiro, 1906. Good. Five black and white photographs measuring between 8½" x 11" and 9 3/8" x 11¾" and all are captioned in the negative. One photo (the street scene) fair due to heavy creasing and two tears; the others good minus to very good with varying degrees of creasing. This is a collection of five large photographs documenting a period of intense urban renewal and important occurrences in Rio de Janeiro history. The photographer, Augusto Cezar de Malta Campos, was born in Alagoas, Brazil, in 1864 and was living in Rio de Janeiro as of 1888. In 1903, Rio's Mayor Francisco Pereira Passos appointed him as a photographer to document his urban renewal work as well as the work of the Rio de Janeiro Tramway, Light and Power Company, as it installed electric tramways and new public street lighting. One of the images here captioned,"Rua do Callete - Rio 25-7-06. Adm. do Dr. Passos," was certainly part of that project. The other four were also taken in either July or August 1906, so may… Read More

Description:
Washington DC: Fourth of July Hemp Coalition, 2003. Very good +. 14" x 8½". Small poster illustrated recto, text on verso. Very good plus: light edge and corner wear and just a hint of waviness. This quirky poster advertising the 2003 Fourth of July smoke-in at Lafayette Park in Washington DC was illustrated by artist Steve Marcus. Also known as "smarcus," his work may seem familiar as it covered a range of media, including cover art for "High Times", pieces on MTV and the Cartoon Network, animation for the Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication tour, and even a 4' x 2' stained glass piece for the Mesivta Tifereth Jerusalem yeshiva in New York City. When he first delved into the celebration of cannabis through his art, it was 1992 and the government had a hardline stance on drug use, including marijuana. Mainstream public approval that embraced the drug's medicinal benefits was still years away, making his outlaw art even more attractive to an underground subculture. The turnaround in marijuana… Read More

Description:
[Lawrence County, Alabama], 1825. Good. Single leaf measuring 9½" x 7¾". About good: portions had separated completely and were crudely repaired with tape at an early date; those repairs are now reinforced with archival tape. This is a manuscript challenge to a duel. It reads in full: Sir, the manner in which you have recently attempted to villify [sic] my character together in the personal insults I received from you on a late occasion compels me to insist on your giving me the only satisfaction which a Gentleman can accept of. I will expect you to meet me at 6 o'clock tomorrow morning in Mr. [Strains?] Field. I expect you to answer by my friend Mr. Pettigrew with whom you can arrange the terms. The author, William McCain, his opponent, Isaac Owen, and a penciled date written in a relatively modern hand give clues as to why this challenge was solicited. William McCain was the son-in-law of John Byler for whom the old Byler Road in Alabama was named. Byler Road was one of the first roads… Read More

Description:
South Bend, Indiana, 1938. Full limp leather bound with rivets. 32 pages with 76 black and white photographs hing mounted, several to a page, vertically overlapping. Most photos measure 2¾" x 4 ½" and most are captioned in small typescripts that are scotch taped to the pages. Album very good with moderate wear and scuffing; internally near fine or better. A working realtor's album highlighting his listings in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. His highlights may not have been entirely accurate as we note that a commercial realtor named Rufus W. Smith in South Bend, Indiana was found in 1933 to be engaged in the sale of real estate without a license while participating in a fraudulent land deal. One listing is for a huge mixed use building that contained 22 apartments, 12 stores and four offices. The photographs for this and another commercial building provide fantastic street level views with lots of business signage. The book also has several listings for farms, including one with 304 acres and a… Read More
