The first editions of two short novels by Scottish author Charles MacFarlane (1799-1858). Front fixed endpaper bears bookplate of the Rev. J. Congreve, Overslade. John Congreve opened Overslade private classical school near Rugby, England, by 1854. In the 1860s, George Farncomb Wright became his partner in the school; they dissolved their partnership for "the tuition of young gentlemen" in 1871. In Good+ Condition: rubbed; 1-cm. tear in leather at head of spine; front free endpaper and following blank leaf are detached but present; closed tear across title page of Legend; clean and solid.

Publisher's advertisements on 8 pages following text. No dust jacket. First edition. The author, Patrick MacGill (1889-1963), was an Irish poet, journalist, and novelist who served with the London Irish Rifles during the First World War. After being wounded at the Battle of Loos in 1915, he was recruited into military intelligence and worked for MI 7b for the rest of the war. In this collection of poems written during the war, he expresses a positive and patriotic perspective. In Near Fine Condition: corners lightly rubbed; front free endpaper has vertical crease; clean and bright.

Contemporary calf with five spine compartments between double gilt rules; black leather label with gilt-tooled title in second compartment. Green label on front fixed endpaper: "From Joseph Funk & Sons Cheap Printing and Binding Establishment." This appears to be the only work every published by Andrew Hess and Henry A. Showalter. The two volumes are paginated continuously and bound together. Very scarce. In Fair Condition: both boards are detached but present; loss of some leather on front board; title page is detached but present with loss along gutter, which results in minor loss from text on title page verso (To the Reader) but not from the title page itself; old repair holding back free endpaper to back board; old dampstain along lower page edges; foxing and occasional staining.

Publisher's advertisements on back flap and back section of dust jacket. The author, Lily MacLeod Glendinning (1907-1951), was a literary critic on the staff of the Ladies Home Journal. She wrote this account of her battle with cervical cancer, hoping to provide comfort and guidance to other women struggling with cancer. She referred to her doctor as "Dr. S.," presumably referring to Dr. Guy Lacy Schless (1929-2011), the former owner whose name is on the front free endpaper. Cleveland: Privately Printed, 1907. Paperback. Near Fine. [8] p., [1] leaf of a plate, loose, as issued: portrait; 23 cm. No stitching; loose in a brown wrapper, as issued. Wrapper title in black within a decorative border. Wrapper title: A Portrait of Shakespeare by Nicholas Parr printed from the original plate with descriptive text. This is #125 of a limited edition of 250 copies. The engraver is actually Nathaniel (not Nicholas) Parr (d. 1751) according to the Oxford DNB. The wrapper is handmade paper watermarked Fabriano Italy. The text is printed on handmade paper with an elaborate armorial watermark. Small label inside back wrapper for the Burrows Brothers, Co., Cleveland, Ohio (probably the printer). The plate was only previously printed in 1747 for inclusion in Thomas Whincop's A List of All the Dramatic Authors with Some Account of Their Lives. Very scarce. Walter Madden (1909-1993) lived in Carlisle, part of the municipality of Flamborough, which became part of the city of Hamilton, Ontario, in 2001. He wrote a number of books of poetry. Scarce. In Good Condition: staples are rusting; cover is lightly soiled; front cover starting to tear next to upper staple; text is clean and solid.
