A long monograph by the prominent Lefkadian and historian of the island Konstantinos Machairas (1882-1967) professionally bound by the former owner, eminent medieval historian Prof. K. M. Setton of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, whose bookplate it bears and whose initials appear on the heel of the spine. Two or three small spots (shown), small scuff mark on spine (shown), small remnant of label on monograph cover (shown).A hard-to-find first edition of Machairas's detailed history of the island, starting with the conquest of Lefkas by Venetians under Morosini at the start of the Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War in 1684. In 1715, in the Seventh Ottoman-Venetian War, Venice reclaimed the Morea and Lefkada remained under Venetian rule until 1797, when Napoleon ended 1,100 years of the Serenissima.Monograph identified by Machairas as a "continuation of our treatise "Political and Diplomatic History of Lefkada (1797 - 1810)".

A little foxing, age-soiling, a loose hinge, one loose page. The last 16 pages are of Henry Altemus Company catalogue advertising.
The author's name is actually Moore, misprinted in earlier editions. This format was part of the Altemus Series 58 "Boys and Girls Classics" (No. 91), printed between 1899 and 1906. This edition is among the early ones of the series, published in 1901, based on the presence of Sea Kings and the absence of Vic in the publisher's advertising section in the back of the book.
Vic, the life of a fox terrier told in his own "words," quickly became a classic upon publication, and is still read today; early editions are hard to find.

Book condition would be Near Fine, save for a little foxing on top page edges, and slight bumping at heel of spine. Spine of dust jacket is tanned, and there are a couple of very small tears on the back of it, as well as a tiny chip out of it at back of head of spine. Binding itself is tight, solid and straight. All pages bright, clean and unmarked.Prof. Martines broke new ground with this book, describing the social, political, financial, familial and civic circumstances and backgrounds of prominent Florentine humanists, as well as how they were regarded by other prominent Florentines of the time.From exhaustive research in the manuscripts of the Archivio di Stato, he has shown that fewer of the leaders of humanistic endeavor relied on outside patronage that had been supposed; he also shows the principal taxpaying families of Florence during the earlier Quattrocento.

Book is in good+ condition. Pages tight (some uncut), a little age-darkened, but no foxing. Map in good condition, with slight staining; protective tissue present but detached. Some separation of front hinge. Rebound?
Charles Thomas Marvin was the correspondent for the Globe at St. Petersburg and an accomplished writer on Russia. In 1882 the radical liberal member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne, Joseph Cowan, sent him to Russia to interview the generals and statesmen involved in the Russo-Indian/Central Asian Question, a matter of considerable concern to the British in view of their extensive interests in the region. This book is the result, and it is a fascinating account (quite well written) of the apparently very frank views of the Russian military and political leadership regarding Anglo-Russian relations, capabilities, strategic interests and intentions in the area.

In his Preliminary Remarks (Vorbemerkung) Prof. Mayer mentions that the excellent work of Prof. Claude Cahen (to whom the book is dedicated) has tended to overshadow inquiry into the important Crusader state The Principality of Antioch (1098–1287), and this work seeks to provide material to remedy that deficiency.

This is volume 6 of the prestigious series Monumenta Germania Historica from the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
