Description:
320 pages. In Modern Greek. A long monograph by the prominent Lefkadian and historian of the island Konstantinos Machairas (1882-1967) professionally bound by the former owner, eminent medieval historian Prof. K. M. Two or three small spots (shown), small scuff mark on spine (shown), small remnant of label on monograph cover (shown).A hard-to-find first edition of Machairas's detailed history of the island, starting with the conquest of Lefkas by Venetians under Morosini at the start of the Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War in 1684. In 1715, in the Seventh Ottoman-Venetian War, Venice reclaimed the Morea and Lefkada remained under Venetian rule until 1797, when Napoleon ended 1,100 years of the Serenissima.Monograph identified by Machairas as a "continuation of our treatise "Political and Diplomatic History of Lefkada (1797 - 1810)".

Description:
A little foxing, age-soiling, a loose hinge, one loose page. The last 16 pages are of Henry Altemus Company catalogue advertising.
The author's name is actually Moore, misprinted in earlier editions. This format was part of the Altemus Series 58 "Boys and Girls Classics" (No. 91), printed between 1899 and 1906. This edition is among the early ones of the series, published in 1901, based on the presence of Sea Kings and the absence of Vic in the publisher's advertising section in the back of the book.
Vic, the life of a fox terrier told in his own "words," quickly became a classic upon publication, and is still read today; early editions are hard to find.

Description:
Book condition would be Near Fine, save for a little foxing on top page edges, and slight bumping at heel of spine. Spine of dust jacket is tanned, and there are a couple of very small tears on the back of it, as well as a tiny chip out of it at back of head of spine. Binding itself is tight, solid and straight. All pages bright, clean and unmarked.Prof. Martines broke new ground with this book, describing the social, political, financial, familial and civic circumstances and backgrounds of prominent Florentine humanists, as well as how they were regarded by other prominent Florentines of the time. From exhaustive research in the manuscripts of the Archivio di Stato, he has shown that fewer of the leaders of humanistic endeavor relied on outside patronage that had been supposed; he also shows the principal taxpaying families of Florence during the earlier Quattrocento.

Description:
Book is in good+ condition. Pages tight (some uncut), a little age-darkened, but no foxing. Map in good condition, with slight staining; protective tissue present but detached. Some separation of front hinge. Rebound?
Charles Thomas Marvin was the correspondent for the Globe at St. Petersburg and an accomplished writer on Russia. In 1882 the radical liberal member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne, Joseph Cowan, sent him to Russia to interview the generals and statesmen involved in the Russo-Indian/Central Asian Question, a matter of considerable concern to the British in view of their extensive interests in the region. This book is the result, and it is a fascinating account (quite well written) of the apparently very frank views of the Russian military and political leadership regarding Anglo-Russian relations, capabilities, strategic interests and intentions in the area.

Description:
In German. Prof Mayer is the Professor of Medieval and Modern History at the University of Kiel and a renowned authority on medieval history.

In his Preliminary Remarks (Vorbemerkung) Prof. Mayer mentions that the excellent work of Prof. Claude Cahen (to whom the book is dedicated) has tended to overshadow inquiry into the important Crusader state The Principality of Antioch (1098–1287), and this work seeks to provide material to remedy that deficiency.

This is volume 6 of the prestigious series Monumenta Germania Historica from the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Flyleaf bears signature of Prof. K.M. Setton (1914-1995), eminent medievalist at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, to whom Prof. Mayer gave this copy.

Page tops dyed. 300+ illustrations.John McAndrew's magisterial and comprehensive study of a virtually neglected subject: the history, development and functions of the unique structures built to accommodate the worship of the huge numbers of indigenous people converted to Christianity by the few hundred friars accompanying the Spanish conquistadors. Such rapid conversion of so many people had never happened before, and provisions had to be made for them in the absence of traditional European (or local) structures of worship. Combining indigenous and European roots, traditions, building techniques, practices and customs resulted in what McAndrew calls "...what may be the most dramatic American architectural innovation before the skyscraper: the outdoor church of… Read More

Description:
Like new except for some slight age-darkening, some slight tanning of spine and rear top edge of dust jacket and a very little wrinkling at top of dust jacket. No damage to volume itself; a coupe of light pencil marks.Victor Louis Ménage (1920 – 2015) was a British historian, Turkologist, specialist in the early Ottoman Empire, holder of the Chair of Turkish in the University of London, and an editor of the Encyclopedia of Islam. His important monograph is one of the best studies of the evolution and origins of some of the material in Mevlânâ Mehmed Neshri's important history of the Ottoman Empire. Neshri (also Neşri) (1450 - 1520) was a relatively obscure figure apart from his role as an early Ottoman historian. His work has provided an important source for the history of the Ottomans of the time, and was drawn from a number of sources and traditions, as well as his personal experiences of the death of Mehmed ll and the subsequent Janissary riots of 1481 .Ménage identifies many of the… Read More

Description:
Upper corner of front cover shows a fold mark; binding and pages solid, tight and unmarked. Includes Robert Montgomery's obituary from the New York Times under pastedown, which left a slight shadow on flyleaf.

From J.H. Heineman's "Open Letter" series, which was, according to the Foreword, "...conceived and developed as the platform for an international assembly of prominent people and established writers to discuss, dissect and delve into contemporary ideas and mores."
And:
"Each letter is a personal polemic in which the author appeals to the mind rather than to the emotions; and chides with the épée rather than bludgeons with the hammer."

The best summary of the work comes from Robert Montgomery's own Foreword: "This is an ill-tempered book, but not, I hope, one the reader will think merely polemic. The anger which inspires it is not an end in itself. It is intended to awaken in the television viewer some conception of the dangers inherent in the free-wheeling oligopoly which dominates the mass… Read More
