London, Glasgow, Sydney, Auckland: W. Collins sons & Co, 1926. 1st. hardback. Good, 1st edition, signed on ffep, missing d/j, blue boards, red ruling and cover titling; missing spine cover, text block firm, slight foxing.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). Denham Dobie has been brought up in Andorra by her father, a retired clergyman. On his death, she is snatched from this reclusive life and thrown into the social whirl of London by her sophisticated relatives. Denham, however, provides a candid response to the niceties of 'civilised' behaviour. CREWE TRAIN is one of Macaulay's wittiest satires. The reactions of Denham to the manners and modes of the highbrow circle in which she finds herself provide a devastating - and very funny - social commentary as well as a moving story.

Inscriptiion on ffep otherwise no markings.. C (216 x 135). Who is right about what it means to be human? The Greeks envisioned an ideal humanity. Their ethereal sculptures depict a transcendent, spiritual model. But today many scientists view human beings as mere machines. And some believe we will be able to make machines with human-like intelligence in the near future. The biblical view of humanity is different from both of these. For the writers of Scripture, to be human is to be in the image of God. Guided by this view, Ranald Macaulay and Jerram Barrs discuss the nature of spiritual experience. As the pursuit of true spirituality takes us away from sinfulness, it moves us closer to what God intended us to be. When we are truly spiritual, we are fully human. Macauley and Barrs begin by stressing the centrality of Christ. Then they… Read More

(Vol I).. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). Macaulay's History was originally published in 1848 in 5 volumes, but this edition reduced that to two, without a reduction in text. The History is famous for its brilliant ringing prose and for its confident, sometimes dogmatic, emphasis on a progressive model of British history. According to this view, England threw off superstition, autocracy and confusion to create a balanced constitution and a forward-looking culture combined with freedom of belief and expression. This model of human progress has been called the Whig… Read More

The intricate tale is more true to place than any of MacDonaldÕs books. As Malcolm is drawn into the web of secrets surrounding majestic Lossie House, with the marquis of Lossie and his tempestuous daughter Florimel at the center of them, we meet some of MacDonaldÕs most memorable characters. Through them Malcolm must unravel many mysteries that hang over the town and its peopleÑand himself!

From the bestselling author of Agent Zigzag and Operation Mincemeat , comes a thrilling new true story of Second World War deception.D-Day, 6 June 1944, the turning point of the Second World War, was a victory of arms. But it was also a triumph for a different kind of operation: one of deceit, aimed at convincing the Nazis that Calais and Norway, not Normandy, were the targets of the 150,000-strong invasion force. The deception involved every branch of Allied wartime intelligence - but at its heart was the 'Double Cross System', a team of double agents controlled by the secret Twenty Committee. These double agents were, variously, brave, treacherous, fickle, greedy, and inspired. They were not conventional warriors, but their masterpiece of deceit, never before fully revealed, saved countless lives. Their codenames were Bronx, Brutus, Treasure,… Read More

Description:
London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2012. 1st. h/b. Fine, 1st edition.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). The 1914-18 conflict narrated through the voices of the men whose combat was in the air. The empty chairs belonged, all too briefly, to the doomed young First World War airmen who failed to return from the terrifying daily aerial combats above the trenches of the Western Front. The edict of their commander-in-chief was the missing aviators were to be immediately replaced. Before the new faces could arrive, the departed men's vacant seats at the squadron dinner table were sometimes poignantly occupied by their caps and boots, placed there in a sad ritual by their surviving colleagues as they drank to their memory. Life for most of the pilots of the Royal Flying Corps was appallingly short. If they graduated alive and unmaimed from the flying training that killed more than half of them before they reached the front line, only a few would for very long survive the daily battles they fought over the ravaged… Read More

Description:
London: Faber & Faber, 1943. 4th imp. hardback. Very good, 1st edition (1940) 3rd impression, no d/j, blue card boards (v minor grubbiness on edges), original tap-bound spine, text block firm, pages crisp and unmarked (wartime papers). Neat donor's inscription on front pastedown.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). In the decades since his death in 1963, Louis MacNeice's reputation as a poet (and, indeed, amongst poets) has grown steadily, and there are now several generations of readers in Ireland, Britain, and beyond, for whom he is one of the essential poets of the twentieth century. His work has also received increasing attention from academic writers and students. For both readers and critics, the nature of MacNeice's poetic work as a whole is a matter of importance. Includes poems drawn from the 1935 collection and from The Earth Compels.
