Description:
Madrid, 1728. Good. Manuscript on paper. Folio. 38 ff. (tears and wear along fore-edges, smaller tears along top and bottom of leaves, persistant waterstains, fol. 1 damaged with loss). Top portion of final leaf excised, but the text is continuous (see below). Recent sympathetic wrappers. With faults, and priced correctly. EXCELLENT SPANISH GOLDEN-AGE MANUSCRIPT WHICH DOCUMENTS AN ATTEMPT TO "CERTIFY" THE NOBILITY OF A NOBLEMAN IN PROVINCIAL SPAIN WHOSE FAMILY WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FOUNDER OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS. The purpose of the document is to demonstrate the nobility of Don Manuel Silbestre Joseph de Herrera y Tassis. There had been a reorganizing of the government of the town Bañares, in the province of Burgos (now Logroño), and Herrera believed that he should be the "acalde" (similar to the post of "mayor", though with greater authority than the modern mayor). However, to claim the position, it was necessary for some unstated reason for Herrera to prove that he was of noble birth. TEXT:… Read More

Description:
[Cologne?], 1600. Very good. Copperplate engraved map (uncolored). 13.5 x 17.4 cm. (5 5/16 x 6 7/8 inches), trimmed around the platemark. Scale not stated. Stipple engraved seas. Unmatted, unframed. An attractive, early map of North and South America. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL ENGRAVED MAP, not a facsimile. JUSTLY FAMOUS MAP OF NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA. The present map appeared without change in five editions of Ptolemy's "Geographiae universae" published between 1596 and 1621. The verso is blank, and there are two vertical folds suggesting that it was published in an octavo volume, possibly Matthias Quad's "Compendium universi complectens geographicarum enarrationum Libros sex" (Cologne: W. Lutzenkirch, 1600). The digitized National Library of the Czech Republic copy of 1600 "Compendium" shows that copies of the present map were bound between pp. 652-653. In the present map are depicted "Hispania Nova," "Fretum Magellanicu[m]" and there is a dotted sea between the words "Mare Pacifico." Geographically,… Read More

Amsterdam: Chez l'honore et fils, libraires, 1748. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 vols. in one. 8vo. I: [10], cxix, [7], 208 pp. + 1 f. ("Errata" for Tom. 1). II: [2], 231 pp. + 1 f. ("Addition") + 1 f. ("Errata" for Tom 1 [sic]). First title page with unobtrusive paper defect on lower margin, not affecting text; this copy is lacking half-title and Errata leaf for Tom. 2. Very attractive 19th-century French red glazed boards, red morocco spine, lettered in gilt directly (two insignificant worm-holes on lower hinge, leading nowhere; trifle wear to binding extremities. Completely unsophisticated. First printing of "Telliamed," in every way a remarkable book. Disguised as an Oriental fantasy, it contains perhaps the earliest appearance of one of the most important of all evolution speculations, namely the so-called ultra-neptunian theory: that the entire Earth was, and is, a marine deposit, and that all life on land originated from creatures of the sea. Maillet hypothesized that the earth was… Read More

Paris: Guillaume et Companie, Libraire, rue Hautefeuille, no. 14, 1817. Good. 2 vols., small 12mo. 233, [3]; 250, [4] pp. With 2 engraved frontispieces. Contemporary French mottled sheep (extremities worn and bumped; back cover of vol. 2 abraided with loss, leather on front hinge quite worn but the board is quite attached), marbled pastedowns and endpapers, all edges marbled. Text with minor foxing but completely unmarked and unspoiled. NOT ex-library! No copy of this edition has been located, despite extensive searching. KVK and FirstSearch list a digital surrogate (only), but the link wrongly points to a completely different edition (Ledentu) which consists of 288 + 332 pages. The two frontispieces in our edition appear to be reverse copies of the illustrations executed by J.M. Moreau le jeune for Lacombe's 1777 edition (the first illustrated). The political, philosophical, and theological significance of this novel is very considerable, and Marmontel's text was quickly translated into German,… Read More

Lisbon: Na officina de Francisco da Silva, 1751. Very good. 8vo. 11 pp., with maritime woodcut vignette on p. [2]. Modern vellum binding, edges untrimmed (light toning, minor staining). In very good antiquarian condition. THIS IS THE EARLIEST ACCOUNT OF THE FIRST OFFICIAL DIPLOMATIC MISSION TO BRAZIL BY ANY AFRICAN KINGDOM, DESCRIBING KEY ELEMENTS OF THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE, SPECIFICALLY THAT OF THE ANCIENT WEST AFRICAN KINGDOM OF DAHOMEY (PRESENT DAY REPUBLIC OF BENIN). INCREDIBLY, OUR PAMPHLET WAS PUBLISHED IN PORTUGAL ONLY A FEW MONTHS AFTER THE EMBASSY WAS COMPLETED. THIS IMPORTANT MISSION WAS AN EVENT OF DOUBLE SIGNIFICANCE, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC, THE RESULT OF THE CHANGING GEOPOLITICS OF THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN AFRICAN SLAVES. No copy is listed in Rare Book Hub, which currently has more than 13 million records in the Rare Book Transaction database. Description:
[San Francisco]: Star Press, 1902. First Edition. Good. Small 4to. 44 pp. Original printed wrappers (chipped, spine partially defective). The complex and protracted litigation over the San Francisco estate of one of the richest men in America, mining tycoon James Graham Fair, dragged on for many years after his death in 1894. Born in Ireland in 1831, Fair and his impoverished father came to the U.S. in 1843. James went to California in 1850 to labor as a lowly prospector; he soon turned his attention to Nevada. After working as a superintendent and engineer at various mining sites, he formed a partnership with three men, two of whom were born in Ireland and one was the son of Irish immigrants. Together they made millions in silver mining in the Comstock Lode, one of the largest silver deposits ever found; indeed, in just six years the Comstock Lode produced more than $100 million worth of silver bullion ($3.5 billion in today's currency). By 1875 the four "Silver Kings" had become fantastically… Read More

From the introduction (translated): "We propose to describe the principal books illustrated by Sebastien Le Clerc; our focus is on Parisian imprints, and among these are the publications in which the text is particularly notable. Paris: Chez Didot, 1754. Unbound. Very good. Size of images: 19 cm high (platemark) x 28 cm wide (platemark). 25 cm high x 35 cm wide. Professionally matted and framed. Two original handcolored copperplate engravings of Mexico City. The first engraving is a bird's-eye view of Mexico City (Tenochtitlan) on Lake Texcoco, depicting the City as it was when the Spanish conquered it. The engraving shows the various islands and causeways or bridges which linked parts of the city. Also includes men on horseback, domestic animals, boats, churches, dwellings, wicker dams, and the main square. ¶ The second is a bird's-eye view of Mexico City as it appeared after the Spanish destroyed and rebuilt it. Much of Lake Texcoco has been filled in, and there are many more buildings (it has been said that within a few months 100,000 houses had been built). The engraving depicts boats, palm trees, native Americans carrying burdens, and the dam. The probable source of the two images is Montanus's "De nieuwe en onbekende… Read More

Near Fine., preserved in a modern black photo-album (PVC / acid emissions free). This is apparently the most significant private collection of photographs documenting a 1970s Black-owned daycare in Inner-City Detroit. Founded by Earlene and Ernest Morris, the of the Morris Child Development Center for Infants and Toddlers was located in the historically African-American neighborhood of Bagley in Detroit (today 94% of Bagley residents are African-American). Upon its inception in 1965, the Center was the ONLY daycare in the state of Michigan to be licensed to care for infants and toddlers. That the Center survived (and flourished) was a major achievement for its owners; furthermore, it afforded neighborhood mothers the opportunity to work or go to school in hopes of someday realizing their own personal goals. Finally, the Center served as a meeting… Read More
