Various, 1864. Various. Very good. This group of eight documents and letters is associated with Major Pleasant W. White, the Confederacy's Chief Commissary for Florida, and Captain James McKay, of the Fifth Confederate Commissary District. A good case could be made that they were the two most important officers in the Confederacy as it was their effort providing the food, especially beef, that kept the Confederate Army in the field. The archive contains: 3 August 1863 - Special Order from the Secretary of War's Office in Richmond directing Captain Bryant to "report to Major P. W. White Chief Commissary State of Florida for assignment to duty." 27 October 1863 - Letter from the Assistant Quartermaster General's Office in Richmond to White , a native of Quincy, authorizing him, as well his officers and agents, to receive a "'tax in kind' in east and south Florida." Camp Lucas (St. Louis), Missouri to Warren Court House, Pennsylvania, 1847.
This one-page stampless folded letter measures 15.5" x 10" unfolded. It is dated "Camp Lucas May 30th 1847." The cover must have been delivered by hand, outside of the postal system, as it is unfranked and bears no postmarks. It is in nice shape. A transcript is included as is a copy of Masters's service summary showing he was assigned to Lt. Col. Powell's Missouri Volunteers.
In the letter John Masters informs his father that he has been appointed an ensign in "1st Battalion of St. Louis Volunteers, Comp (E)" and will be departing for Santa Fe the next morning. He asks his father to pay a $15 debt he incurred with a St. Louisan and informs him to address future letters to him in care of the battalion at Santa Fe, noting that mail for Santa Fe departs St. Louis on a monthly basis.

This book has the same cover illustration as a German edition, Lebende Thierbilder, along with three of the same movables. Complete with six movables: Happy Family - works fine; tab shortened and very worn, Geese, Ducks, and Chickens - works fine; tab shortened and very worn, Watch Dog - Works fine; tab shortened and very worn; small piece missing at dog's neck, Deer and Squirrel - works fine; tab very worn; small piece missing from one of the deer's feet, Four Cows - works fine; tab mended/replaced; crease to one cow's horn/nose, and The Rider - works fine; mended/replaced tab. Re-backed many years ago, but now partially disbound. Pages have finger smudges and minor soiling. Cover is soiled with some edge wear; front cover is missing a small triangular piece at the upper left corner.

U.S.S. Independence at New York, 1843. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This three-page stampless folded letter, measuring 16.5" x 9.5", is datelined "U. S. Ship Independence / New York, Nov. 21st. 1843." It bears a manuscript "12½" rate mark (the cost to send a letter from 80 to 150 miles) and a circular red New York postmark dated November 13. In nice shape; small hole from opening the seal. A transcript will be provided. When Greene wrote this letter, the U.S.S. Independence had just become the Flagship of the U.S. Home Fleet. As Greene awaited the ship's departure from New York, he penned this humorous, gossipy, and cattily racist letter to his wife, Catharine, in Philadelphia, who was recovering from a fairly serious illness. Basel: Heinrich Petri, 1578. Disbound. Very good. This disbound leaf from Munsters Cosmographia measures 8" x 13.5". It contains six woodcuts showing unusual men and animals from the Indian subcontinent. The leaf is in nice shape with some marginal toning. One woodcut shows a pigmy conversing with a man from Dondun where the peoples' ears were so large they could be used as sleeping blankets. Three woodcuts picture storks: one of them shows giant storks fighting a human army. Another illustration shows an ant that is larger than a tree, and the last is of a monkey-man carrying his sword and spear. . Sebastian Munster was a cosmographer and professor of Hebrew who taught at several European universitys. During his life, he became the center of a network of scholars who provided him with maps, anecdotes, and descriptions of pehnomena of the known world.
