His experience with meningitis, abscess of the brain and infective sinus thrombosis was summarized in his seminal Pyogenic Infective Diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord of 1893, which gave sixty-five detailed cases together with operative procedures. His Atlas of Head Sections, published the same year, was intended to supplement and illustrate Pyogenic Infective Dseases. This copy of the Atlas was once owned by British surgeon George Grey Turner, for whom "Turner's sign"--local areas of bruising and induration of the skin about the navel and loins in hemorrhagic pancreatitis--is named." It was also issued as a loose, unbound portfolio, which is relatively easy to find. This issue, which appears to be 'as issued by the press', has elements that would increase the production cost *and* be more fragile. The mounted cutout on the front wrapper adds signficantly to the production process and the plastic comb spine and acetate wrapper are fragile and prone to failure. The inner printed front wrap appears to be the same as what was printed on the outside of the portfolio. Large, graphically strong poster railing against what was seen as the police state tactics of government agents in Queensland. Notes actions against political/union organizers, women, blacks, the gay community, etc. All the 'stronger' given the political environment in the area at the time. One known copy in institutional collections, at the National Gallery of Australia. Queensland under the Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen - a notoriously corrupt right wing demagogue who banned street marches etc. etc. and overtly moved Queensland towards a police state. He put in a Police Minister who was already was tainted with corruption (and was subsequently tried and jailed after the government fell). This is a reading copy reproduced for a reading and discussion by Archibald MacLeish at the Mexican North American Cultural Institute in Mexico City, April 27, 1962. It is typescript reprint from MacLeish's original publication of the long poem "Conquistador" in 1932. MacLeish was deeply invested in Mexican history and travelled for pleasure and diplomacy to Mexico frequently. He was an American poet and writer who was associated with the Modernist school of poetry, studied English at Yale University and law at Harvard University, and was the Librarian of Congress under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1933, "Conquistador" was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the first of three awarded to MacLeish.
