A poignant fable about the escapades of a magpie—whose body is made of a pinecone—and three little pinecone chicks as they leave the mantel of the fireplace on which they live to venture out into the world. With illustrations by Maby, about whom little is known. Am, Sam, and Gram are the names of the three little birds, who, despite their journey into the exciting territory of a woodland stream, apparently cannot escape their ultimate fate as fireplace kindling. Following the story is an explication of the Moral in the tradition of Aesop and other fable literature. The gorgeous illustrations, with their strong, simple pochoir coloring, are stylistically akin to the work of Theodor Van Hoytema. Bound in quarter buckram with blue paper over boards, titled in black to upper cover and with paper label to spine. Slight soiling to covers, minimal warp to boards, else very good.

Rio de Janeiro: AloĂ­sio MagalhĂŁes, 1971. MagalhĂŁes, AloĂ­sio. Octavo. 24ff, frenchfold. One of 96 copies. According to the artist's statement, printed on both covers in tĂŞte-bĂŞche format in two colors, the contents consist of sixteen-sheet outdoor posters cut into octavo french-fold leaves, inserted at random across the edition. MagalhĂŁes's conceit revolves around the idea of reassembling what was once "informação inteira," which then become open to the imagination and whimsy of the viewer. Widely considered a pioneer of modern design in Brazil, MagalhĂŁes's work included the design for the first logo for Brazil's Rede Globo television network, as well as a major redesign of the country's banknotes - which incorporated a moirĂ© pattern that made forgery quite difficult. Malutzki reprints spam emails from Hong Kong, machine-translated into German and then "back-translated" into a "not less funny" English. Added are collages, all original to the copy, made up of letter envelopes and Chinese Yuan notes. Certainly humorous at the outset, the book also bears insidious traces of the porosity between the internet, governmental control, capital exchange, and the slipperiness of "authenticity." Bound in patterned paper over boards, with paper label. Remote rubs to corners, else fine.

Illustrated with sixteen original color lithographs by Marie Laurencin. Bound in paste-paper-covered boards with a gilt-stamped cloth label on spine. Faintest scattered foxing, minimally affecting a couple of the plates, small booklabel inside front cover, else about fine in printed dust wrapper, which is lightly toned to spine and has a slight outward crease. Housed in a numbered slipcase, which is cracked at the head and foot of spine.

Cambridge, MA: Bow & Arrow Press, 1993. Mazur, Michael. Small quarto. (iv), 16pp. Deluxe edition, one of fifty copies, signed by the author, Melinda Marble, and artist, Michael Mazur, and with two original drypoint etchings. This first book by Marble is the haunting tale of a girl troubled by her origins, and of the mother who fled when she was young. Mazur's etchings complement the emotional intensity of the story, with their play in illusion, pattern, and light. Very fine in handmade decorated paper wrappers. Housed in a red and gold silk dropback box.

An illustrated miniature catalogue for the Stanley Marcus Collection exhibition at SMU in Dallas, Texas. Mint in violet patterned paper boards with printed label. Lacking original paper chemise. Verona: Edizioni Valdonega, 1980. Two quarto volumes. (lix), (288)pp; (viii), (10)ff. One of 125 copies in two volumes with ten leaves from original publications. This issue was not for sale. Illustrated with a series of woodcuts showing how a book is made, 116 reproductions of specimen pages, twelve pages of type specimens, and thirteen versions of the Officina Bodoni's pressmarks in their original colors. This bibliography of works by Giovanni Mardersteig's renowned private press also recounts the history of the press and explores its creative process. Extremely fine in tan cloth backed in brown morocco, with original slipcase which has a tiny snag in the morocco-trimmed opening. T.e.g. Together with: memorial keepsake for Mardersteig, and a catalogue for the Press's1954 exhibit at the British Museum - both printed by the Officina Bodoni, and both fine in wrappers.

One of 175 copies, signed by Mariani and Moser at the colophon and inscribed by Moser to Vance Studley at the title page. The rear foldout presents in series Moser's five wood engravings, which also punctuate Mariani's collection of poems. Printed in red and black. Bound by Gray Parrot in quarter vellum with gilt finishes and mauve papers over boards. Marbled endpapers. Mild rubs to corners, else near fine.

Leningrad: Raduga, 1927. Lebedev, Vladimir Vasil'evich. Small quarto. (12)pp. Bright color illustrations throughout. A rhyming Russian story for children, in which a worn-out old carpenter's plane makes a new plane, his "grandson," to carry on his work. The plane is aided in his work by fellow woodworking tools like the chisel, mallet, and saw. A collaborative work by writer, translator, and poet Samuil Marshak, and painter and graphic artist Vladimir Lebedev. The pair worked together frequently, and were important in the development of children's literature in Russia. In the 1920's, Lebedev became known as "King of the Children's Book," and Maxim Gorky said of Marshak that he was "the founder of Russia's (Soviet) children's literature." Marshak published under Raduga (Rainbow) from 1922 to 1930, while he worked in Leningrad as the head of the Children's Literature Studio. Stapled into self-wrappers, showing some wear at the spine and light staining. Near fine.

London (but Hertfordshire): John Marshall (but Anne and Peter Stockham), 1976. One of forty-eight copies. In this "cabinet," there are two miniature books and a collection of twenty-eight hand-colored engravings of the objects listed in the books. The books are bound in full leather, one maroon and one orange. The whole is boxed in a cloth-covered blue slipcase with a gilt-stamped label. Box generally toned, else a near fine facsimile of one of the rarest 19th-century miniatures sets for children. (Books measure 2 1/2 by 2; 63x53mm).
