Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An extraordinary mask, probably 19th century, has been formed from a large, single Lingzhi fungus (Ganoderma Lucidum). The natural structure of the fungus has been coaxed into forming a nose, ears, a mouth and eyes. Two holes on either side allow for a natural twine to have been threaded through so that the mask can be either worn or hung for (perhaps) ritual display. The surface is hard, glossy and dramatically wrinkled. 22.5cm (h) x  21cm (w).It is believed that such masks were worn ritually to frighten off malevolent spirits. Most extant fungus masks are of black (or blackened) Lingzhi fungus. Pannier (2009, p. 68) illustrates a mask translated as a 'mushroom' mask which appears to be made from a single fungus – possibly a Lingzhi – but coloured with red pigment.Nepalese fungus masks are rare. Dating them is difficult. There are few in private or museum collections. The surface is glossy and encrusted with a varying patina suggesting some significant age.… Read More

Ragnar Hoppe reported Matisse saying in 1919 that "this little apartment here is inconvenient, but I've lived here for many years, I've grown attached to it, and I can't be without the view." Three-measure AMQS from the Italian musician and composer, Thalberg student who became professor at the Santa Cecilia academy of music at Rome, and subsequently had several successful European tours as a pianist. In 1863 he finally settled in London, where he remained for the rest of his life. He composed several hundred songs and pianoforte pieces, many of which became very popular. 12.5 x 7 cm, mounted to a slightly larger sheet. Fine.

The contract (or "agreement") between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Tiomkin is written in the form of a letter to "Dear Mr. Tiomkin"; it refers to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer  in the first person plural and to Tiomkin in the second person. The contract defines the rules pertaining to the use of the Russian-born American film composer's services by MGM Studios in a "photoplay" involving the Albertina Rasch Ballet. The "photoplay" is not named, but the date and the participation of the Albertina Rasch Ballet allow to identify it as the short film A Night at the Shooting Gallery (1929). 6 pp., 8 1/2 x 11 in. Very fine condition. 4.3 x 6.5 inches (11 x 16.5 cm.).Born into slavery as conjoined twins in North Carolina in 1851, Millie and Christine were taken from their parents and sold three or four times, stolen and retrieved; placed on display at fairs and "freak-shows," from New Orleans to as far as Canada. At one time, after being sold to J.P. Smith, they were kidnapped and taken to England. They were retrieved by Smith with the aid of their mother and brought back to North Carolina in 1857. Smith taught them to read and write as well as sing and dance and the twins composed original music for their act. Uncommon autograph musical quotation from one of the composer's Fairy Tales, Op. 34 #1, signed ("Nicolas Medtner"), consisting of three bars of music marked "Largamente , cantando" on a hand-ruled staff. On an album page (7.6 x 8 cm), London, 16/II/1928. In very fine condition, mounted to a slightly larger sheet. Medtner was one of the very last Romantic composer-pianists, his career being overshadowed by his close contemporaries Skryabin and Rakhmaninov. Like them, he placed the piano at the heart of his creative activity, but unlike them he tempered a Russian spirit with musical thought more firmly based in the Western classical tradition.
