Description:
New York: Beer & Schirmer, 1865. 4 pp. [cover, 2 p. score, catalog no. 2] Folio. Some foxing and offsetting, wear at extremities, disbound. Cover title: Choix de Romances Francaises favorite. For voice and piano. Text in French, with English translation. ''Il est un air a la fois vif et tendre, dont j'ai garde le touchant souvenir. J'aimais jadis; J'aime encore a l'entendre: il m'annoncait qu'elle devait venir.'' Nadaud is known for his political chansons in the tradition of Piere-Jean de Beranger. This, of course, is not a political song. Catalog on last page of vocal music offered by G. Schirmer, 701 Broadway (1866-1880), including Songs, Secular vocal ensemble music, and Sacred vocal ensemble music. Compositions by American composer Dudley Buck in the catalog indicate that this was probably a later printing from the same plates much later than 1865, yet WorldCat only finds two copies of this imprint.. Wraps. Very Good. Folio - 13'' X 10.5''.

Norman, Ok.: University of Oklahoma Press, 1962 xiv, 496 pp. [Including a selection from the works of Dan Emmett and others. With illustrations, including portraits and musical illustrations, and with a bibliography.] Small chips and tears to the edges, sunning to the dust jacket, book very good or better. Inscribed to Saul Novack, musicologist, by the author. From the jacket copy--''The blackface theater that flourished in nineteenth-century America had roots had roots extending across the Atlantic to the England of the late seventeenth century, when writers, poets, dramatists, and musicians were composing a literature of sympathy and protest against the perversity of the slave trade. In America the initial and tentative stages of Negro impersonation and song came between 1815 and 1830 with the creation of two 'Negro stage characters'--one, the southern plantation hand, the other, the ludicrous black replica of the white dandy of Main Street. // By the late thirties Daniel Decatur… Read More
