Card. Very Good. N.d., circa 1900. 10 by 5 cm, at the widest and tallest. A homemade, folk art needle book, with charming blue watercolor touches such as a simple flower figure in the center, and blue lacing holding the whole thing together. Opens to fabric needle stays.

Indianapolis, Indiana: Boncilla Laboratories, Inc.. Wraps. Near Fine. Delightful cosmetics and health products trade promotion from the 1920s. (No exact date.) Diminutive, oblong, 7 by 7.5 cm. Unpaginated, 28 pp., plus wraps. Virtually every other page with color illustrations, and color decoration on text pages. Two page color plate in center, capturing perfectly the Art Deco style of the period. A miniscule edge tear. Otherwise, pristine.

Celle, Germany: Chr. Hostmann Steinberg'sche Farben Fabriken G.M.B.H.. NA. Fine. A high Art Deco sales promotion for paint colors. 27.5 by 19 cm. Depicted in a highly stylized illustration is a Deco tower with trees in the foreground, and a kiosk in the center. The ad's text is as follows: "Plakat-Farben von eminenter, beständiger Leuchtkraft ein Erfolg besonderer fachmännischer Bemühungen".

Valencia: Lit. S. Dura. Leporellos. Very Good. N.d., circa 1890. Oblong, 10.5 by 15 cm. 12 color plates depicting crowd heading to arena on the front cover, then within the leporello all the pageantry and ritual of the bull fight, with an illustration of the bulls reposing in a pasture on the back cover. The panorama was almost certainly produced as a souvenir -- a keepsake for someone attending the bullfight and hawked by peddlers calling out to passerbys on the periphery of the arena. The quality of the printing is not necessarily of the highest level, but the arrangement of the images in a leporello has a compact charm all its own. Light age toning, and trivial signs of wear.

Wraps. Near Fine. Taxidermy and fur garments trade catalogue, with explanatory material on sources, manufacturing, styles and uses of the garments and other products. A highlight is a whole section devoted to "Roosevelt African Trophies". N.d., circa 1910. 4to. 26.5 by 20 cm. 46, [1] pp. The cover comes across as very modern, with a close up photo of fur that somehow reads as modern and thus gives the initial impression that the brochure is of more recent vintage than in fact it is. With large photos of the fabrication process, in addition to photos of non-model human models wearing the coats, and of articles shown without models. Also many testimonials.

Circa 1880s, these five cards were all promotions, or ads, for The New Carlton Dining Room in Boston. The cards depict a fat klutz contending with various elements of the National Pastime. We see this man knocked off his feet by catching a ball, stiffly awaiting a pitch while at bat, as a catcher, striking out and lolling after apparently hitting a home run. The captions are"Bravo! The Pet of the Nine", "Something must be done! Put it there!", "A close affair. Hugging the bat.", "Struck out.", and "Hero of a Home Run. The Ladies Favorite". These cards were not designed specifically for the named Boston restaurant, but rather, they were produced by a printer to be sold to businesses which would then have their own business name and information printed onto the card. Peru, IN: W.C. Redmon, Sons & Co., 1940. Wraps. Spiral. . Very Good Plus. Lovely trade catalogue with metallic color illustrations of hampers and baskets of a wide variety. 4to. 29 by 22.5 cm. Unpaginated, 15 leaves (30 pp.) With two copies of four page price list also bound in the spiral. The cove has a faux wood finish with stripes of a metallic silver green as backdrop for the title and other lettering. In the center is a profile bust of an Indian, the company insignia and a play on its name of "Redmon". It is the metallic quality of the silver and other colors that distinguishes this trade catalogue and make it of interest as a printed object in and of itself, beyond what might seem the mundane things it is featuring. The fancy fruit and Easter baskets stand out for the combination of colorized photos of fruits within the colorful assortment of baskets. New York, 1917. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. A rare souvenir program of an exotic hit from the teens. 4to. 30.5 by 23 cm. Unpaginated, 36 pp., with numerous color plates of the characters and one double paged plate of a desert dancer scene. The whole plot is laid out, and let's just say the story line would make a Verdi operatic melodrama seem straightforward in comparison. Such convoluted exotica was the rage of the day, however -- David Belasco extravaganzas were still the thing, and Puccini's "Turandot" would follow a few years later. The costuming in the plates shows the strong influence of the period's Secessionist aesthetic -- think Klimt and the like. The producers were top Broadway operators of the time. Morris Gest actually married the daughter of Belasco. Light wear to the wrap covers.

Very Good. 8vo. 22 by 15 cm. 104 pp. Many illustrations of quirky and unsual crepe paper concoctions for cotillions, parade floats, electric shades, hats, ice cups -- there is apparently little that crepe paper couldn't ornament! Fun and informative manual and trade catalogue. Soiling to the cover. Text block detached from wraps.

Moscow: I. Knebel, 1911. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. 4to. 30 by 23 cm. Each volume is 12 pp., including wraps (text and illustrations on inside of cover, front and back). Immensely enchanting illustrations by great Ukrainian artist. Scarce in the West. OCLC First Search reveals only two copies at Western institutions -- Oxford, and the Getty. (We assume there are copies in Russia and/or the Ukraine but these aren't picked up on OCLC.) Narrative involves a boy traveling on his hobby horse to a toy village. Condition: scattered light soiling. Name written in light ink on one cover.

London: J. B. Nichols and Son, 1838. Half Morocco. Near Fine. Extra-illustrated copy. Elephantine folio, 55 by 36 cm. Wood-engraved title vignette, 31 plates and plans after Augustus Pugin and others (20 present in two states, giving a plate total of 51), comprising aquatints, five with full or partial hand-coloring, line etchings, some on india paper mounted, and some mounted, and two folding, the frontis plate itself opening up to be over 100 cm wide. Attractively bound in half black straight-grained morocco over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards. Spine with seven raised bands forming eight 8 compartments, all decoratively tooled with floral devices in gilt. Condition: occasional spotting, some light marginal age toning.

London: Samuel and Richard Bentley. First Edition. Half Calf. Very Good. Large folio, 22.5 by 16.5 inches, or 57 by 42 cm. 13 hand-colored plates, plus large hand-colored illustration on title to plate section of the book. This volume was followed by a separate volume commemorating the same event issued three years later (1827), and the these two volumes were later collected, along with yet another work (Whittaker's plates of the same event) into a single volume in 1837, See Tooley 343. Calf is heavily scuffed in corner triangles and a few other spots, and rubbed particularly along hinges, with abrasions on the spine and a few spots of crud. Minor margin soiling of a few plates. A number of short closed tears in the margins -- most have been repaired but traces of them still discernible. Generally the plates are bright and clean, and this remains a collection of magnificent, exciting plates.

Utrecht: Francescum Halmam, Guilielmum Vande Water, 1697. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾. 275-416, 1-5, 289-605, 155-280, 427-566 pp. Issued 1697 to 1699, an early bound academic periodical, written in Latin, dealing with issues of philosphy, religion, etc. No reference found in Brunet. The two volumes contain four tomes as indicated on four title pages, have three folding plates between them. One of those plates has four images. Based on page numbering, there are gaps in the text, and based on a single auction record from 1978, there are missing plates. Here there are three folding plates, compared to a dozen in the auction record. What is here is reasonably clean, and text blocks are tight. Rebacked with modern calf and spine labels. Calf boards on the dry side but still handsome. Plates are attractive.

London: Benn Brothers, Limited, 1923. First Limited Edition. Vellum. Fine. No. 6 of 12 signed limited deluxe edition. 155 pp + 69 plates, 9 of which are in color. Standard and pioneering work on subject, here produced with large paper (12 by 9.5 inches), heavy stock paper and full vellum binding. Plates feature some color photographs. Other than typical, but slight, bowing of vellum, and the lightest of soilage, If even that, on rear board, this is a fine copy in its finest incarnation.

(A few are just poems.) Send-up of Sarah Bernhardt. 12 full page drawings by author, also comical. Original pictorial wraps bound in. Some rubbing and wear to cloth boards. Tight and clean.

Reprint of 1908 classic on English sporting prints, with all the masters represented here (Alken, Pollard, Rowlandson, Wootton, Stubbs, etc.). Book has sunning on upper sliver and lower sliver of boards, otherwise, fine condition. DJ has price neatly slashed off, and two small chips. Two tears in upper part of rear, each about 1". Still a very viable DJ.

England, 1863 - 1869. Full Blindstamped Morocco. Very Good. 4to. 29 by 24 cm. The watercolors and other drawings, which are mostly mounted, are generally of exceptional quality. Botanicals dominate, especially in terms of the watercolors, in which eleven or twelve can be so categorized. Of these, three feature fruit prominently, and another three show bouquets. One of the most charismatic of the colored artwork is a page with illumination and Gothic calligraphy. In this, there is floral decoration and small butterfly figures. Another striking page is dedicated entirely to butterflies, with a larger watercolor done on pith paper, in a Chinese manner, at the center, and cut-outs of watercolored butterflies, also probably on the same kind of paper, in the corners. Not to be overlooked are two portrayals of birds, and most unusual is a pencil and watercolored drawing of a snake.
