Description:
1st edition OF PART II of Yoichiro Nambu's 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery of the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking in subatomic physics" (Nobel Prize Committee). NOTE that we offer both Part I and Part II together in a separate listing. Nambu's work "was an important precursor to the theory that unifies electromagnetic and weak forces, and similar symmetry breaking is central to most modern particle physics theories" (Schirber, "Nobel Focus: Particle Physics Gets a Break," Phys. Rev. Focus 22, 2008). According to the model put forth in these papers, "the Lagrangian [method] which describes a physical system may be invariant under a symmetry group which is ‘spontaneously broken' by the physical states of the theory" (Kantorovich, Scientific Discovery: Logic and Tinkering, 237). In short, Nambu's work "showed how to connect the highly symmetric, massless particles that appear in the underlying particle theories with the massive particles observed in the real world" (ibid).… Read More

Description:
Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1894. 1st Edition. ORIGINAL WRAPS, FIRST EDITION OF SIMON NEWCOMB'S IMPORTANT STUDY OF THE MOTION OF THE MOON AND IN THE ACCURACY OF HANSEN'S LUNAR TABLES. Sometimes known as "America's first great astronomer", Newcomb was an American-Canadian astronomer, autodidactic polymath, applied mathematician (Physics Today, Simon Newcomb, America's First Great Astronomer" in Physics Today 62, 2, Feb. 2009). By 1900, he "was arguably the most renowned astronomer in the world. European scientific institutions and societies showered him with their highest honors, including the 1890 Copley Medal, awarded by the Royal Society of London. Fellow Americans celebrated his achievements with honorary degrees, and in awarding him the first Catherine Wolfe Bruce Gold Medal in 1898, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific proclaimed in its citation that he had "done more than any other American since [Benjamin] Franklin to make American science respected and honored throughout the entire world"… Read More

Description:
Washington DC: American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2004. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPS OF THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNING DISCOVERY OF GRAPHENE, A FORM OF CARBON JUST ONE ATOM THICK - THE THINNEST MATERIAL & FIRST TWO-DIMENSIONAL MATERIAL EVER DISCOVERED, AS WELL AS ONE OF THE STRONGEST MATERIALS IN THE UNIVERSE. In this paper, Dutch-Russian physicist Andre Konstantin Geim and the Russo-British physicist Konstantin Sergeevich Novoselov first announce their discovery and production of graphene. "As a conductor of heat it outperforms all other known materials. It is almost completely transparent, yet so dense that not even helium, the smallest gas atom, can pass through it" (Nobel Foundation, Nobel Prize in Physics 2010 for Graphene - "Two-dimensional Material). "Graphite has been a known quantity for a long time (humans have been using it since the Neolithic era). Its atomic structure is well documented, and for a long time, scientists pondered whether single layers of… Read More

London: Macmillan, 2004. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION, ORIGINAL PRINTED WRAPS, OF A 2004 ESSAY BY THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNING ENGLISH GENETICIST, PAUL NURSE. The essay is discusses both a personal and scientific turning point, relating to "how a tiny observation turned out to have a controlling influence" on his 1974 research. "Paul Nurse has helped to show how the cell cycle is controlled. Through studies of yeast in the mid-1970s, he was able to show that a special gene plays a decisive role in several of the cell cycle's phases. In 1987 he identified a corresponding human gene" and in 2001, Nurse won the Nobel Prize "for their discoveries of key regulators of the cell cycle", contributing to a revolution in cell biology and cancer research. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillan. Original wraps. 4to. (11 x 8.25 inches; 275 x 206mm. Mailing label on front wrap; very slight rubbing at the edges. The wraps are tight and solid. Description:
New York, 1924. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF "ONE OF THE FOUNDATIONS OF INFORMATION THEORY" (Claude Shannon, A Mathematical Theory of Communication, 1948). Beginning with this lengthy twenty-two page paper (see Origins of Cyberspace 163), Nyquist's nascent work ferreting out the necessary bandwidth requirements for the transmission of information was foundational and it was critical to and enabled Shannon's development of information theory. NOTE that we separately offer Nyquist's second paper, Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory as well. Nyquist's work studied the relationship between the speed of a telegraph system and the number of signal values employed by that system. His efforts established the principles by which continuous signals could be converted into digital signals and provided "the first statement of a logarithmic law for communication" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Nyquist was "the first to express the amount of ‘intelligence' that could… Read More
