With 44 full page chromolithographed illustrations of the uniforms of the United States Army from 1775 to 1888, accompanied by Nelson's text in letterpress. The lithographs are after water colors by H. A. Ogden. Prepared and executed by the Quartermaster General of the United States under authority of the Secretary of War. Lithographed by G. H. Buek & Co. De Luxe edition, one of 1500 copies of which this is No. 51. Reissued in 1959 and 1998, but the reissues are a pale reflection of the beauty of the original chromolithographs. Kyoto, 1952. Hardcover. Very good plus. Third edition. Folio, bound accordion book. 32 leaves of heavy card printed. Fifteen full page illustrations in full color of fabric bags used to house tea jars or kettles for use in the traditional tea ceremony. Each plate contains four images with a facing letterpress explanation in Japanese. Both the plates and the letterpress printings are tipped in. The boards are covered in a printed paper with a paper label to the upper board. This is the third printing, preceded by two printings in larger format, but scarce in its own right. The boards are worn at the edges, and the color plates have pulled away at the corners where they are adhered, with some resulting tearing of the paper though not affecting any of the images. .
