Description:
N.p., probably printed later. Gelatin silver print on glossy paper. 23 x 5, archivally mounted and matted. Very Good. This large-format photograph depicts a large group of Osage on the farm of a well-known original allotment holder, Robert "Bob" Morrell (and his wife Grace Penn Morrell), on the Osage Nation reservation. This was a critical time in the history of the reservation. In the early 1920s, the Osage were targeted for the rights to oil discovered on their land. Despite violence, deceit, and theft by non-Osage, the oil boom enriched some of the nation; by the mid-1920s mineral rights holders were described as the "richest people in the world." A family of four with full allotment could have earned the equivalent of $600,000 a year from their rights. The occasion of the first Princess celebration on June 10, 1929 does not appear to be otherwise recorded, and may have been the precursor to the current Osage Tribal Princess Sorority, which elected its first princess in 1941. The Osage Tribal…

Description:
Mountain Grove, 1936. Small broadside measuring 11 x 8 ½ inches. Pin holes on margins, some small marginal tears, very good minus. Very Good. This anti-FDR broadside - which did little to alter the outcome of the 1936 election - underwent a handful of printings in the leadup to the 1936 election, this one by Michael S. Glenn of Mountain Grove, Missouri. The broadside attacks various New Deal policies including the Agricultural Adjustment Act (3A). The last item on the fictional auction list is a "Vote Baiting Relief Fol De Rols," which includes, "down and out writer projects, rag doll fantasies, tin can daubings, national youth ticklers, $50,000 ten-cent pension probes; alphabetical tom tits for making district and regional white collar pads, hat stretchers, blind-bridles for voters, wallisized and hopkin-ated electro non-talking check grinding machines, etc." We find scant information on Michael Glenn, the copyright holder, but he likely copied an existing design, as the single…

Description:
New Hampshire, 1857. Broadside advertisement, 5 ½ x 11 inches. Very Good. An unusual advertisement for a penmanship instructor, a Mr. Chadbourn, announcing the opening of his academy on September 15, 1857 in Wolfborough, New Hampshire. The broadside states, "Inspired with the confidence of more than five years experience as a Teacher of Writing, now offers to the Ladies and Gentlemen of Wolfborough his universally admired system of Penmanship, which for beauty of style, ease of acquisition, rapidity of execution, and ready adaptation, to the wants of business and private correspondence, stands unrivalled by any system extant." An interesting relic from the middle of the Bleeding Kansas period, which would serve as a harbinger for the bloodiness of the American Civil War. A very good example with a chip with loss to upper corner and some toning to head, but attractive and well preserved. Unrecorded in OCLC.

Description:
San Francisco, 1968. Fourteen silver gelatin prints measuring 8 x 10 to 6 x 8 inches, mounted on grey 20 x 16 inch artist's board. All initialed "J.P. / 68" on board. Some wear to boards, photographs generally fine with fine contrast. Near Fine. An evocative series of portraits likely taken in San Francisco in 1968. The photographer is unknown - possibly a student? - but is likely a peer of the subjects, as evident from the relaxed and candid nature of most of the portraits. One sign in the background appears to be the Alamo theatre, and the general scenery in the background suggests San Francisco as well. The zeitgeist of the time is conveyed in spades, with a more humane and less fiery portrayal than is often seen in portraiture of the New Left.

Description:
New York: Geo. P. Hall and Sons, 1900. Mammoth silver print measuring 16 ¼ x 13 ½ in. (sight), matted to 24 x 20 ¼ inches. Very Good. A scarce view of the South Street docks in lower Manhattan c. 1900, showing the Fulton Street Ferry. The Fulton Street Ferry connected Manhattan's Fulton Street to Brooklyn's Fulton Street, and in the era preceding the Brooklyn bridge was an important means of travel between the boroughs. Steam travel began in 1814 when Robert Fulton, with the help of Hezekiah Pierrepont, obtained a lease from the city. The steamship Nassau was the first boat used by the company. The ferry was influential in the growth of Brooklyn Heights as suburb. The George P. Hall and Sons company was active from 1886-1914. The bulk of their work was views of New York City. Though examples are prolific, we find no record of this image in the NYHS archive or elsewhere. The photograph shows subjects posed outside the terminal. A very good minus example with some toning and light…

Description:
New York and Environs, 1930. Excellent. We find scant information on Henry Reister, a professional photographer operating throughout the New York metropolitan region in the early part of the century. His studio moved several times, from the Bronx to Bridgewater, New Jersey, then to Woodlawn, New York. This interesting and varied collection from his estate shows the type of work available to a professional photographer operating in New York during the period - architectural shoots, product photography, events and some portraiture. The opulent wealth of New York's upper classes during the 1920s is on display in Reister's architectural work, which makes up a large portion of this collection. The burgeoning commercial age is also shown in his product photographs, most notably a series of photographs of Remington typewriters, a series of photographs of the newly created New York Telephone Directory, two photographs of automobiles and a series of brightly-lit interior grocery store displays. Contents as…

Description:
Boston, 1851. Autograph letter signed by Whipple and addressed to Oakes at her Brooklyn address. Fine condition. 9 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches bifolium. Fine. An interesting letter written by critic Edwin Percy Whipple to Elizabeth Oakes Smith, encouraging her to publish in Graham Magazine. He then offers sympathies on a play performed in Philadelphia, and excoriates the American theatre and its inability to do justice to Shakespeare's work. The letter was written during the period when Oakes published her "Woman and Her Needs" series in the New York Tribune, though it would appear from subsequent events that Whipple's opinion had been formed by her earlier work. Whipple's views on Smith would change later and be marked by Whipple's negative critiques of Smith's writing. In 1855, Whipple published a review of Smith's book "The Sinless Child," which criticized her unconventional views on marriage and motherhood. Smith responded with a scathing letter, accusing Whipple of being a "literary bully" and a…

Description:
Chihuahua, 1905. Albumen photographs most measuring 4 x 6 and smaller. Photographs faded and with wear, some stray marks and scuffs to versos, good condition overall. Good. We find scant information about Circo Perez, a traveling circus in Chihuahua at the turn of the century. The circus was directed by Praxedis Perez and appeared to be largely a family affair. The present collection includes three overtly circus-related cabinet cards: an outdoor scene of the circus tent with a crowd of spectators looking at the camera, the verso bearing the note "Circus Perez, Chihuahua, 1898"; an advertisement for the troupe, Compania Acrobatica de Variedades y Grandes Novedades, with a portrait of the director Praxedis Perez; and a cabinet card portrait of a girl in costume. The other photographs appear to be a mix of gifts from grateful patrons and unidentified photographs, likely family members. Two photographs relate to a Capitan Manuel Villordo, both dated in Chihuahua in 1900, one showing the man on a…
