London: George Newness. Very Good+. 1898. 2nd English Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. The 2nd English Edition (preceded by the Constable edition a year earlier). The official account of the first Fram expedition of 1893-6, an attempt to reach the geographical north pole by harnessing the natural east-west current of the Arctic ocean. Nansen took his ship to the New Siberian Islands and frize her into the pack ice and waited for the drift to carry her towards the pole. Impatient after 18 months due to the slow speed and erratic chracter of the drift, Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen left the ship with a team of Samoyed dogs and sledges aiming for teh pole. They did not reach the pole, but achieved a new farthest north record, before retreating to the safety of Franz Josef Land.
