Description:
Paris: E. Dentu, 1864. 8vo. [i-xvi; I]-XX; [21-]439, [1 ]. Text in French. Publisher's pictorial wrappers, largely unopened (slight lean to spine, tear at edge of front cover, moderate creases, wear and soiling, moderate foxing to bulked edges and front and rear pages). First edition. A superior copy and quite scarce in the original wrappers. Nadar, in addition to being the most famous French photographer of his time, was also a caricaturist who relished his own celebrity. He had an enormous hot air balloon, Le Geant, which came with a gondola and a photographic studio, a print room, two cabins, a storeroom, and a lavatory. The present work describes its brief but glorious career, including the not-so glorious crash in Hanover, in 1863, that seriously injured his wife.

N.p., n.d.. From the Bart Auerbach Collection. 35 pages, 4to (10 ¾ × 8 ½ inches), a working draft written in pencil with very extensive revisions by the author (virtually all of the crossed out words and passages are still readable); the pages mounted on heavy gauze for binding, gray wrappers lettered in black and gold on front cover the covers slightly soiled and worn). A fine manuscript by American's first really significant modern theatre critic and an early champion of Eugene O'Neill. "Throughout the 1920s and 1930s Nathan was the most influential commentator on contemporary American drama, attracting hostility from controlling interests in the commercial theatre for his authoritatively iconoclastic denigrations of many productions. Among the playwrights he fostered were O'Neill, William Saroyan, Arthur Miller, and Sean 'Casey" (The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Literature in English). Nathan's main point in this essay dealing with theatre criticism in America is that "of all the…

Lincoln: Journal Company, 1887. 8vo. 16pp. Very fine folding map by F. Hirschfeld, with railroad routes in color, printed Chicago: Shober & Carqueville: "Map of Nebraska and Eastern Colorado." Original printed wrappers. Some light soiling; map with a few small separations along folds. FIRST EDITION, published by the Burlington Route. "Karrow [for the map] shows editions of 1883,1885, and 1887 as well as this issue. This map is similar to the 1880 Map of Nebraska by Herman Smith, also published by the State Journal Company, but the title has been moved to the upper right corner to allow coverage of north eastern Colorado and the Burlington Railroad route to Denver. This map was also issued by the Burlington Railroad in 1886 and 1887 as part of their route promotion (Karrow 12-0574 and 12-0591). Compared to the 1880 map, there is much new development of railroads and the northwestern corner of the state" (Rumsey; Karrow 12-0581).

Padua: Seminario, 1807. First edition. Dried and somewhat cracked, bottom spine compartment perished, internally a fine, crisp copy. Two parts in one volume, octavo (240 x 165 mm). 441 pages. Errata leaf at end. Contemporary Paduan red morocco, richly gilt, the arms of Padua at center of each side, a wide gilt floral border, spine gilt, black morocco lettering-piece, edges gilt. A major source, often cited, of bio-bibliographical information on the most famous citizens of Padua, framed around an exegesis of the statues surrounding the Prato della Valle. The two parts of the book divide the exterior ring (containing 44 statues) from the interior ring (containing a further 44 statues and obelisks). The square became the property of the city of Padua in 1767, having formerly belonged to the monks of Santa Giustina. The plan to restructure the square was that of Andrea Memmo (depicted in the final statue of the exterior ring). Among the notable figures represented with a statue, and described in…

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1976. Near-fine, with light edgewear to wrappers. 4to. Original photographically-illustrated wrappers. Signed first edition of this leading 20th-century sculptor's multimedia memoir. Signed by Nevelson on the half-title. "I don't think of myself as a strong woman. I never even heard that word about me until recently. I always thought that bluntly I was a clamorous goddamn exciting woman. I didn't want to be strong at anything. I wanted to have a ball on earth. But I wanted it through the channels that I want." Composed of extended conversations with Nevelson's longtime assistant American photographer Dina MacKown transcribed from interview tapes, the autobiography delivers an immediately intimate portrait of the artist. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photos and reproductions of Nevelson, her work, her family, and her studio.
