Description:
Pamphlet removed 8vo, 32 pp. Early signature on title page, partially disbound, last eight pages are completely separated from the rest of pamphlet. Some heavy foxing to a few pages, and there are some chips and tears at the extremities, not affecting text. These pamphlet reviews the causes of the War of 1812, but carries a strong anti-war message that is signed with the names of 34 congressmen (names are printed on pages 27&28). The pamphlet accuses the Madison Administration of trying to incite people to war on the issue of ‘impressments’. They maintain that the French are as guilty as the English on the subject of impressments. The last four pages of the pamphlet present statistics on exports to England and France.

Description:
Pamphlet 8vo, paperbound 16 pp. Partially disbound, but still in tact. Normal aging and browning, with some chips and folds at the extremities. Also, slight fold at the center, and early owner’s signature on title page. About very good. Very interesting pamphlet prepared during the Madison administration that takes a look at the challenges facing a new country. For the most part the report addresses the belligerent acts of England and France prior to the War of 1812. The report also challenges the legality of the British blockade and the taking of our ships on the high seas. Importantly, it points out that France is no better than the English in this respect, and that it would be hard to justify war against one without the same treatment of the other. However, the authors were also very realistic about going to war with both England and France who were "two of the most powerful [nations] in the world". The report recommends that we not submit to French and English legal rationalizations for their… Read More

Description:
Large 8vo red cloth. Illustrated 545 pp. Binding worn at the edges and hinges are somewhat weak, but still reasonably tight. Library and other stamp on end papers. Nice copy overall. Osborn (1857-1935) was a very important scientist in the early part of the last century. He is considered ‘the father of American Paleontology’, and was one of the most distinguished presidents of The American Museum of Natural History. More than anyone else, he brought dinosaurs to the Museum, and actually presided over the Museum during its zenith of influence (see Preston’s Dinosaurs In The Attic). Osborn was also an important influence in anthropology. He was very much interested in early man, and believed Central Asia would yield the earliest fossils of man, or what was considered the ‘missing link’. This work covers man’s roots from the earliest periods through the Stone Age. Included are illustrations by Charles Robert Knight.
