Description:
[Culver City]: RKO Radio Pictures, 1936.. [1],34,[1]pp. Small folio. Highly pictorial self-wrapper. Heavily illustrated throughout. Horizontal fold (possibly as issued), narrow, clean intermittent splits and a short snag at the spine fold, otherwise a very good copy with the rare color herald tipped in, as issued. A highly pictorial and unusually content- rich press book displaying the publicity paper and substantial and significant text issued to promote John Ford's 1936 film, based on Dudley Nichols's adaptation of Sean O'Casey's play about the 1916 Easter Uprising. While considered one of Ford's least successful films, it is thought by many critics to be cinematographer Joseph August's masterpiece. As a follow-up to the phenomenal success of THE INFORMER, Ford had initially hoped to direct a film drawing largely on the talents of the Abbey Theatre Players and Spencer Tracy, but Tracy was unavailable and RKO intervened, forcing Ford to include Barbara Stanwyck as a lead, and even inserted… Read More

Description:
New York: Sears and Cole, 1878.. Volume one, of two. viii,251,[3]pp. Original printed wrapper over stiff wrapper. Tile-page printed in color, some color initials and head and tail-pieces. White wrapper dust-soiled, as often, otherwise very good and unopened. First edition of the first volume of the Odell Library catalogue. One of "a very few copies only [of this deluxe issue] ... printed for private circulation." A very interesting private catalogue, printed in various colors, with Gothic and black-letter on occasion, including a wide array of unusual works in a number of fields, particularly bibliography and reference, as well as more arcane topics. Some items are accompanied by lengthy commentary or quotations from secondary sources; others are treated with frustrating brevity. This volume includes items through 1330; the second volume, published in 1879 raised the count to a total of 2,434 items. The library was eventually auctioned by Bangs.

Description:
Culver City; New York, etc.: M.G.M. Studios; Goodson-Todman Productions; NBC, Inc, January - July 1963.. Quarto and octavo. Original typescript and mimeo typescript. Some creasing, ink spill affecting a few leaves at conclusion of one item, otherwise very good. A small group of items attending the genesis of the award-winning anthology show, THE RICHARD BOONE SHOW (1963-64 - 25 episodes). The present material records the early involvement of playwright Clifford Odets, who is denoted "Editor in Chief" of the series. Unfortunately, Odets died of pneumonia on 14 August 1963, and the later script element of the show was overseen by others. Present here are: a) a substantial one-page t.l.s., New York, 25 January 1963, from Marcy Tinkle of NBC, to Odets, talking through points raised in an earlier phone conversation, wrestling with a general theme of the show, forwarding NBC's first "bulletin" on the show, and referring to Odets' role as editor, and occasionally author, of episodes in the series; b) a… Read More

Description:
[Hollywood], 20 September 1954.. [3],71 leaves, plus related documents as below. Quarto. Mechanically reproduced typescript, printed on rectos only. Bradbound in stencil printed wrapper. Some shallow coffee staining to the upper fore-edges of the leaves, otherwise very good. An early and extensive treatment for the multi-award nominated 1956 biopic, directed by George Sidney, based on a final screenplay adaptation of Katcher's story by Samuel L. Taylor and starring Tyrone Power, Kim Novak, Victoria Shaw, James Whitmore and others. This is a rather important copy of the treatment, sent by producer Jerry Wald to playwright and screenwriter Clifford Odets for his review. and comments. It is accompanied by a 2 June 1955 t.l.s. from Wald to Odets, on Columbia Pictures letterhead, forwarding the script: "I would be grateful if you would read this draft ... I am still making changes on it, but I have such a high regard for your opinion and suggestions, that I would welcome them -- good and bad. If you can… Read More

Description:
[Np], [nd. but ca 1962]. [1],205 leaves. Original typescript, on rectos only of 30 x 21 cm stock, claspbound at left margin. Outer leaves a bit chipped, frayed and dust marked, remainder very good or better. Odets's own copy of a translation into German of his 1935 award-winning drama, the translator unidentified. Accompanied by a brief t.l.s. from Odets's agent for foreign rights, Elisabeth Marton, to Odets in Beverly Hills, 17 December 1962: "Dear Clifford: Enclosed is the German translation of your AWAKE AND SING. With kindest regards and best wishes for the holidays, Elisabeth." The typescript bears manuscript revisions and corrections scattered throughout, including one substantial passage on the blank verso of one leaf. The Marton agency transplanted to Los Angeles during and after the war years and continued to represent the translation and foreign rights interests for writers with whom they were associated prior to the war. It would not be impossible that Elisabeth was responsible for the… Read More
