Front free endpaper lacking; fly leaf detached but present. Ex-lib., with ink stamps on front pastedown and fly leaf. Publisher's label on front pastedown. Very clean internally and very good overall. First American edition. Originally published in London in 1888. The fine plates illustrate church monuments, tombs, details of brackets and cornices, a high altar in marble, an organ gallery for the Duomo in Florence, bronzes, an entrance doorway, the Loggia del Consiglio in Padua, terra cotta work, bronze pedestals, wrought iron work, inlaid marble ornament, intarsia woodwork, etc. The American edition is very rare, although the British edition is relatively common. O'Beirne was the chaplain of the fleet under Richard Howe, and this criticism of Parliament includes a number of references to England's dismal performance in the American Revolution. A supporter of the Whigs and their causes, O'Beirne bemoans the misapplication of resources in fighting the American rebels ("a cruel and savage war, against her fellow subjects"), and takes the Tories to task for domestic corruption as well. Pittsburgh, 1864. 382pp. Original half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Front hinge cracked, spine leather chipped, boards worn. Contemporary ownership inscriptions in front free endpapers. Light tanning and an occasional fox mark. Good. O'Donovan travelled extensively in the United States in 1854 and 1855, using Pittsburgh as a home base. He went west to St. Louis in the first section of journey, including a stop in Nauvoo, and afterwards spent the majority of his time in Philadelphia, elsewhere in Pennsylvania, New York, and Washington, D.C. Donovan's interests are almost exclusively focused on the relation of his encounters with various fellow Irishmen and Irishwomen during his travels, and his work is an interesting document of the quickly growing Irish diaspora in the United States during the mid-1850s. A remarkable picaresque history, with many travels through the South between 1800 and 1808. Born in Germany in 1781, Oehler claimed he arrived in Baltimore in 1800 as a bound tailor; escaped to become a dancing master in Alexandria and then a fencing master in Port Tobacco, Maryland; then went to Santo Domingo, where he says he served with Toussaint; Egypt; China; Charleston, South Carolina, in 1802; then Columbia, Augusta, and Nashville. In 1805 and 1806 he experimented with ballooning in Nashville and Natchez (an ad in a Natchez newspaper for 1806 corroborates this part of the sometimes incredible tale). In this message to Congress, Jefferson sends documents showing that the proceeds from the sale of various lots in the District of Columbia have been insufficient to pay the related debt to Maryland, and as a result the necessary funds have been drawn from the U.S. Treasury. He also informs the legislative branch of his intention to make permanent the offices of surveyor and superintendent of the District. A third document delineates the costs incurred in the construction of a jail for the new capital city. All told, a nice example of the federal government's financial management of the District of Columbia, a state of affairs that has continued into the 21st century. A key report detailing construction progress for several prominent federal buildings in the growing city of Washington, D.C. The buildings include the "President's House and Square," "Wings of the Capitol," and "Centre of the Capitol." The text explains the progress in detail, while the folding table lays out a schedule of estimated costs on each building for the years up to 1813. [Bosto, 1828. 8pp. Dbd., loose sheets. Minor toning and foxing. Good. A rare anti-Adams newspaper supplement published during the contentious election of 1828. THE BOSTON STATESMAN was established in 1821 by David Henshaw and his friends. The eventual editor was Nathaniel Greene, who had trained at the New Hampshire PATRIOT in Concord, N.H. Henshaw and Greene organized a dinner in Boston on Jan. 8, 1828 in Andrew Jackson's honor, and actively campaigned for him. Here, the STATESMAN recounts the history of John Quincy Adams' political party, which they label the "monarchy men of 1787." Additionally, the paper covers Hamilton, Adams, and the Sedition Act, along with the party's disloyal actions during the War of 1812 and the subsequent Hartford Convention. Rare, and seemingly unrecorded in OCLC.

His narrative is the primary source for information concerning the De Soto expedition of 1539-43, the first investigation by Europeans of the southeast region of the United States.
