In marbled boards, circa 1900, renewed endleaves, spine artlessly reinforced in cloth, worn at edges. Paper label apparently original. Provenance: Salomon Jakob Florsheim (exlibris). Some light foxing. Reference: Willems 377; Blackmer 120. Hebrew text of "Ma'asot shel rabi Benjamin," accompanied by a Latin translation. This "travelogue" (first published in Hebrew in 1543 and in Latin in 1575) recounts the author's journey through the Middle East and Central Asia in the 12th century. Da Tudela traveled from Spain through southern France, Italy, Greece, Constantinople, Cyprus, Palestine, Egypt, on to Baghdad, and visited many of the local Jewish communities. In brown ribbed cloth stamped in blind, titled in gilt on spine. Corners rubbed, head and tail abraded with loss, abrasions along lower joint, yet intact and entire. Title page printed in red and black; chapter headings and capital initials in printed in red. One of 150 copies (out of a total edition of 3168) printed on Vélin Arches with the engraving printed by hand; this copy numbered 139. Warm seven-line inscription to "Monsieur et Madame Limon" dated January 1, 1975. Bound in original printed wraps. Fine condition. The author was a champion of French wines and one of the early promoters of Beaujolais Nouveau.

Arctic Bibliography 12899 One of the early pioneers to pilot steam-powered ships into the Arctic, Osborn participated in the 1850-51 expedition (led by Austin) to search for the lost Franklin party. The success of Osborn's steamship in moderate ice, according to the Dictionary of National Biography, "held out new prospects for Arctic navigation," and "led directly to the employment of powerful screw-steamers.
