This "travelogue" (first published in Hebrew in 1543 and in Latin in 1575) recounts the author's journey through the Middle East and Central Asia in the 12th century. Da Tudela traveled from Spain through southern France, Italy, Greece, Constantinople, Cyprus, Palestine, Egypt, on to Baghdad, and visited many of the local Jewish communities. Volume 1 only of the author's three-volume history of Sakha (Yakutia), in the Siberian land mass, covering the period from the Stone Age to the early 17th century, including ethnography of the Yakuts.

Remains of original printed wraps severely browned and brittle, with loss, while text is quite fresh with few scattered marginal spots. Bookplate of Frederick Binkerd Artz.

New-York: Leavitt & Co., 1849. First edition. Good. 20 cm; 268; 12 pages, and folded map illustrating the battle of Long Island of 27 August 1776. Bound in at end: title page, table of contents, preface and index only of the author's "Documents and letters intended to illustrate the revolutionary incidents of Queens County" (1846). In brown ribbed cloth stamped in blind, titled in gilt on spine. Corners rubbed, head and tail abraded with loss, abrasions along lower joint, yet intact and entire. Light marginal dampstains to first 16 leaves, text lightly toned. Front blank shows foxing, along with "Documents and Letters" leaves bound in at end. Early gift inscription on front blank. Vertical fold. Yet very good, with unblemished contents. Historic contents include "An open letter to Dr. Einstein" from Soviet scientists Sergei Vavilov, Alexander N. Frumkin, Abram Ioffe, and Nikolay Semyonov, and Einstein's "A reply to the Soviet scientists." Also Oppenheimer's "International Control of Atomic Energy.

Macon: Éditions de la Grisières, 1964. First edition, inscribed. 34 cm; 73 pages, and 18 drypoint engravings by Chantereau laid in loose with tissue guards as issued. Title page printed in red and black; chapter headings and capital initials in printed in red. One of 150 copies (out of a total edition of 3168) printed on Vélin Arches with the engraving printed by hand; this copy numbered 139. Warm seven-line inscription to "Monsieur et Madame Limon" dated January 1, 1975. Bound in original printed wraps. Fine condition. The author was a champion of French wines and one of the early promoters of Beaujolais Nouveau.

This dissertation on the sovereignty of Egypt and the Sudan in the wake of European colonialism was published in the Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science series, volume 53, no. 1.

Arctic Bibliography 12899 One of the early pioneers to pilot steam-powered ships into the Arctic, Osborn participated in the 1850-51 expedition (led by Austin) to search for the lost Franklin party. The success of Osborn's steamship in moderate ice, according to the Dictionary of National Biography, "held out new prospects for Arctic navigation," and "led directly to the employment of powerful screw-steamers.
