Publisher's blurb: "Nostalgia, identity, eccentricity, gin drinking and occasional violence; these are just some of the themes that stand-up comedian Dara O Briain explores in "Tickling the English". O Briain moved to England many years ago, but when he takes his show on tour around the country - from deserted seaside towns and remote off-shore islands, to sprawling industrial cities and sleepy suburbs - it's clear to him that his adopted home is still a bit of an enigma." .

London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1982 0297781065. First edition. Hardback. Almost 9.5" by 6". 305 pages including index, plus many B/W photos. Small neat inscriptions on blank end page opposite title page, but otherwise VG in very worn DW which has had some repairs but is intact apart from being price clipped. (I will throw in as a bonus offer a VG uninscribed paperback copy of Melvyn Bragg's excellent 126 page biography of Olivier as revised in 1989 after the latter's death in that year.) Laurence Olivier was a true legend. No classical actor had ever been such a dazzling star. No star had been such a magnificent actor. In this marvellous autobiography Laurence Olivier tells his own story: his brilliant career as actor, director, film-maker and producer; his role as husband to three women including Vivien Leigh and Joan Plowright; and his many friendships - with Sir Ralph Richardson, Noel Coward and Sir Winston Churchill, to name just a few. CONFESSIONS OF AN ACTOR is more than… Read More

London: William Heineman, 2003 0434008680. First edition. Fine/Fine. Hardback. Complete numberline. No inscriptions or annotations. Illustrated boards for covers. 495 pages. Members of the Polish Air Force fought through the defeat of their own country in 1939 and then alongside the French until the fall of France the following year, when they made their varied ways to Britain. There the Poles were among the Royal Air Force's most successful ace pilots. During the Battle of Britain, the pilots of the all-Polish Kosciuszko Squadron - 303 Squadron to the RAF - shot down more German planes than any other squadron. According to Britain's wartime air force minister, without the Polish pilots 'our shortage of trained pilots would have made it impossible to defeat the German air force and so win the Battle'. This gripping book tells the story of the Polish pilots, who flew and fought for the British RAF in World War Two. It follows five of these pilots from defeat in Poland and France to… Read More

Katherine Ormerod, journalist and social media mogul, is here to burst the Instagram bubble and discuss the real effects of social media 'perfection'. The internet has set destructive standards of flawlessness and comparison. We're working so hard to live up to these new benchmarks that we're burning ourselves out, and we're working so hard to maintain them that we're self-perpetuating an unobtainable reality. Until girls and women alike see the social media fantasies for what they are - constructed realities - and stop comparing their lifestyles, bodies, partners, even families to those seen on their feeds and screens, they will never be able to realize their potential in the workplace, in the political system or in their quest for happiness. London: Grove Presss, 2017 9781611836217. Hardback. Fine/Fine. First edition. Second printing. Unclipped dust wrapper. No annotations or inscriptions. An essential take on the stranger-than-fiction 2016 presidential election from a quintessential voice on American politics and culture. This election cycle was so absurd that celebrated political satirist, journalist, and die-hard Republican P. J. O Rourke endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. As P.J. put it, America is experiencing the most severe outbreak of mass psychosis since the Salem witch trials of 1692. So why not put Hillary on the dunking stool? In How the Hell Did This Happen?, P.J. brings his critical eye and inimitable voice to some seriously risky business. .

London: Grove Press UK, 2011 9781611855852. Softcover. First edition. First impression. Complete number line. Fine. Seems unread. No creasing, annotations or inscriptions. 265 pages. P. J. O'Rourke is one of his generations' most celebrated political humorists, hailed as the funniest writer in America by both Time and The Wall Street Journal. Twenty-three years ago, he published the classic travelogue Holidays in Hell, in which he trotted the globe as a trouble tourist, a chaos rubberneck, sight-seeing at wars, rebellions, riots, political crises, and other monuments of human folly. After the Iraq War too old to keep being scared stiff and too stiff to keep sleeping on the ground he retired from what foreign correspondents call being a s**thole specialist. But he couldnt give up traveling to ridiculous places, often with his wife and three young children in tow. Usually, he was left wishing he were under artillery fire again. O'Rourke's journeys take him to locales both near (and nearly bizarre) and… Read More

This is the story of how each state reacts to the crisis of 1930s, the story of their road to war.It recaptures the concerns, anxietes and prejudices of the statesmen in that time and the people they led. This is a controversial book. Nineteen forty-five remains a great divide, and the horrifying experience of the war years colours and distorts our understanding of the 1930s from which the war sprang. This book sets out to ask, without resort to hindsight, why the world's great powers found themselves involved in this war of greatest destruction between 1939-45. .

Publisher's description: "While the trial of Hitler's fallen elite at Nuremberg has been thoroughly documented, the interval between the Nazis' capture in May and June 1945 and the start of the actual trial in late November has until now remained shrouded in shadow. With 'Interrogations', acclaimed historian Richard Overy opens a new window into the Third Reich, providing an intimate glimpse of the savage dictatorship in its death throes. More than thirty transcripts of the interrogations are reproduced here for the first time, allowing us to hear the voices of the newly captured "Hitler gang" including Goering, Speer, and Hess as they squirmed under the Allies' glare.
