A UNIQUE COPY!!12mo. 2 vols: [2], 352; [4], 291, [1] pp., with 16 folding engraved plates bound horizontally taken from a 16th century edition. Bound in quarter red morocco and paper over pasteboards. Some light scratches and scuffing to the binding, else very good. Light age toning. Clean and crisp throughout. This curious copy of an early C19th edition of Ovid's Latin Metamorphoses with a French translation by J. G. Dubois Fontanelle, was cheaply printed in Paris by Duprat-Duverger and Delalain in 1806 in two 12mo volumes. After a careful investigation, we found out that all the other digitised copies of the same edition of this book, either do not have plates at all or they do, but the plates are totally different, being full-page, none folding and surely executed in a later style. Moreover, the initial plate is not…

All edges sprinkled in red, overhang cover. A very good copy. The first edition of Ovid's classic appeared in 1494 and was multifariously reprinted. This fascinating edition, which includes also the companion work De remedio amoris, was printed by Alessandro Paganini, a rather mysterious printer who produced visually-intriguing imprints during the first half of the 16th century. The Ars amatoria ("Art of loving"), which is the title derived from the manuscript tradition, while the title…
