Description:
1943-1949. Custom half morocco box. Very Good. Highly unusual, handsome manuscript of the scientific data, findings and proceedings of a small ornithology club dedicated to the collection and study of cuckoo eggs, enlivened with sixteen original watercolors of cuckoos, club members, etc. Folio, 39.5 by 29 cm. 171 leaves. (First part unpaginated, followed by 117 pp.) The club was called the Cuculus Canorus Club and was formed in 1943, with four members -- Gordon and Saxon Pagesmith and Douglas and Walter Kemp. A stated objective of the club was to present the collection it would be assembling to the Natural History Museum, and in fact, Gordon Pagesmith did make a significant contribution of bird eggs to that museum, separate from the club's collection. The club ended up collecting about 83 clutches of eggs of cuckoos and the host birds. Besides the diligent compilation of scientific data presented in the text, a source of interest is this club's eccentric rules and proceedings. One of the most… Read More

Description:
Lisbon: Lith. von Palhares. Hardcover. Pebbled cloth spine. Marbled paper on boards. . Very Good. 50 scarce hand-colored costume plates depicting Portuguese characters from all walks of life -- various classes, professions, and activities. N.d., mid-19th century. Brown has a collection of 60 plates from Palhares, not identical to these, all presumably from the Second Series, whereas these are from we believe the first and second series. The Brown plates also appear to be slightly smaller, which may only mean they were trimmed more. Otherwise, we could locate no other institutional copies of Palhares' color costume plates on OCLC First Search. Our collection was made, or held, in German hands, probably originally, and thus the handwritten title which we use as a matter of convenience -- there is no publisher's title to the compilation. The plates stand out from the standard national costume compilation of the day. Perhaps because these weren't created to be in a book, the individual plates… Read More

Extra-illustrated of the fanciful adventure novel, and with a lovely Bayntun three quarter brown morocco binding 12mo. 17.5 by 11 cm. xxxii, 272, xii, 300 pp. Added are six mounted hand-colored plates, augmenting the six black and white plates which are derived from the original eighteenth century edition of this novel. The 1751 novel is in the spirit of "Gulliver's Travels" or "Robinson Crusoe", both of which it has been unfavorably compared to, although the novel also had admirers among the cream of English literature such as Sir Walter Scott and Samuel Coleridge. Description:
London: R. Ackermann. Printed by J. Diggens, 1816. First Edition. Half Calf. Very Good. Imperial 8vo, 10 by 7 inches, 26 by 18 cm. [8], 159 pp. With 76 hand-colored plates, five of which are larger fold-outs. Tooley 361. Abbey Scenery 217. With Papworth's name on title page, which is scarcer than copies without his name so appearing. Majority of plates are aquatints, with a few line-engravings with or without aquatinted sky, but all are hand-colored. Most plates are without signatures or imprints, but a few credit A. Pugin and others. Surely one of the finest, and most pleasing, glimpses of Regency London and its landmarks. Olive calf heavily scuffed, rubbed. Wear to marble paper pastedown. Some starting to front joint but binding still firm. Pages age toned but mostly clean, with some light scattered soiling and/or foxing. Offsetting minimal.

Amiens and Paris: Chez L'Auteur; Librairie A. Raphael Simon, 1874. First Edition. Three Quarter Leather. Fine. Elephant Folio. 1874 and 1876, 200 color plates, each 15.5 by 11 inches, and 1400 marks and monograms. Limited edition copy no. 109 of unspecified number, also signed by Ris Paquot and others. This copy had belonged to H. Descamps, and appears to have been a presentation copy. This massive book, two volumes bound in one, is one of the most sumptuous books ever produced about ceramics and without question, the single most magnificent one dedicated to the history and appreciation of Faience. Ris Paquot wrote other important works about faience, but those should not be confused with this much more lavish production, with its 200 brilliantly colored chromolithographs, which the title page asserts were all retouched by hand! The text is also formidable, tracing the roots of faience to the classical world. It runs 240 oversized pages, including an extensive index. This very rare and… Read More

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1894. First Edition. Full Moroco. Near Fine. With nine original watercolors applied directly to page by artist Catherine Westinghouse. 8vo. 18 by 4.75 cm. viii, 351 pp. With 24 plates of black and white photographs, in addition to the original artwork. While it was not unknown for Victorian hobbyists to draw directly into a book, it was still uncommon, and especially at the level demonstrated herein, with the watercolors looking as if they were part of the original design of the book! The text of the book is a birdwatchers' appreciation, and the author seeks to impart the pleasure and reward of the activity while casually sharing much interesting information about birds. Berlin: Bruno Cassirer, 1920. First Editionx/-e-e,n. . Hardcover. Very Good. Folio. 36 by 26 cm. Unpaginated. Title, 3 pp. of text, in German, giving overview and likening Pascin to Toulouse-Lautrec, followed by 40 glossy leaves, with Pascin's varied artwork entirely on rectos. (Versos are blank.) Sometimes two illustrations on the page. All illustrations have title or short caption. Artwork consists of a good amount of caricature, but also more sober human portraiture, and sometimes the depictions hover between cariature and the more straightforward. Also views of cityscape, beaches, etc. Most of the artwork has a deliberately sketch-y quality, as if dashed off quickly, to capture a moment -- similar to Toulouse-Lautrec, indeed. Light wear.

Description:
Milano: G. Ricordi & C. Editori, 1937. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. Scarce libretto of a strange Futurist one act opera, with talking a tree (Euphobia), shrubs and airplanes among the characters, some of which are actually human --aviators, soldiers and natives -- even if they intone like actors in a Greek tragedy. This oddball propagandistic work, more an oratorio than opera, celebrates war ("sweet war"), aviation and territorial conquest -- the things that cast a spell on so many Futurists, and which were the essence of Fascism. Three copies located on OCLC of this libretto brochure, at Berkeley, Harvard, and one in Italy. (There are copies of the printed music elsewhere). The work was first performed at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1937. 8vo. 20 by 13 cm. 23 pp. Dedicated to Mussolini. Pavolini, like many adherents of the Futurist Movement, came to embrace Fascism. In his case, he had a brother who was a prominent member of the Fascist heirarchy. After the war,… Read More
