Description:
London, New Bond-Street: R. Faulder, 1803. AN INFLUENTIAL CONTRIBUTION TO BIOLOGICAL THOUGHT & A PARTICULARLY WELL-WRITTEN CASE FOR INTELLIGENT DESIGN & BY WILLIAM PALEY. We offer the expanded fourth edition. Natural Theology, first published in 1802, is a work of Christian apologetics and religious philosophy by William Paley (1743-1805), an English clergyman. "The book expounds his arguments from natural theology, making a teleological argument for the existence of God, notably beginning with the watchmaker analogy" (Wikipedia). "In this book, Paley laid out a full exposition of natural theology, the belief that the nature of God could be understood by reference to His creation, the natural world" (UCMP Berkeley). "The fact that Paley's 1802 book was called Natural Theology is no doubt part of why natural theology as a whole is sometimes equated with the a posteriori investigations of nature for the purposes of supporting religious theses. In the analogy that made Paley's argument famous, the… Read More

Description:
Paris: Victor Masson, 1852. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF AN IMPORTANT PAPER BY PASTEUR ON MOLECULAR ASYMMETRY, one of a series on tartaric and paratartaric acid in which he would establish the molecular basis for the asymmetry of certain crystals and racemization. "Early in his career, his investigation of tartaric acid resulted in the first resolution of what is now called optical isomers. His work led the way to the current understanding of a fundamental principle in the structure of organic compounds" (Wikipedia). Throughout his career, Pasteur's guiding principle was that optical activity was generally present in organic products and uniformly absent from inorganic substances. Convinced of an association between molecular and crystalline asymmetry, Pasteur was "entranced by the fact that optically active compounds - such as tartaric acid with its asymmetrical crystals - were produced only by living organisms, not in the laboratory. He theorized that asymmetrical influences such as magnetism or… Read More

PASTEUR: As said, this is Pasteur's announcement of his discovery, but because he wrote two more detailed papers later, there has always been an academic argument as to which paper is of the greatest import and should serve as the official citation [note that we also the more detailed version of the same title and published in the same year, but appearing in Annales de Chimie et de Physique (and which we offer separately). Description:
Paris: Victor Masson, 1860. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF PASTEUR'S DEFINITIVE PROOF THAT ALCOHOLIC FERMENTATION IS DUE TO THE ACTION OF A LIVING ORGANISM (yeast), and is not a purely chemical process as most chemists since. Lavoisier had believed. This work laid the foundation for the germ theory of disease and had significant implications for the fields of microbiology and biochemistry. In December 1857, Pasteur published the first in a series of abstracts, notes, and letters on alcoholic fermentation. When his research was completed in 1860, he published the culmination of his work, the long and classic memoir offered here. Pasteur divided this work into two major sections, dealing respectively with the fate of sugar and of yeast in alcoholic fermentation, it inflicted on the chemical theory what Duclaux called "a series of blows straight from the shoulder, delivered with agility and assurance." "Pasteur established that alcoholic fermentation invariably produces not only carbonic acid… Read More

Description:
Paris: Victor Masson, 1862. 1st Edition. PASTEUR'S SEMINAL REFUTATION OF SPONTANEOUS GENERATION, INCLUSIVE OF "SWAN NECK" FLASK ENGRAVINGS. The doctrine of spontaneous generation -- a belief that living organisms arose spontaneously from non-living matter -- was used to explain the appearance of microorganisms in decaying organic substances beginning with Aristotle and was taken as scientific fact for two millennia. Written in 1861 and published in 1862, Pasteur famously felled the doctrine by demonstrating in this paper that microorganisms did not arise spontaneously but came from pre-existing microorganisms. In understanding the import of sterilized equipment, etc., Pasteur demonstrated the possibility of culturing and studying a single microorganism in the absence of others" (Norman). Taken in total, his work lay the foundation for the germ theory of disease and thus had profound implications for microbiology and medicine. In Volume 52, FIRST EDITION OF "THE BEGINNING OF BACTERIOLOGY AS A MODERN SCIENCE," Louis Pasteur and "the first demonstration of the connection between a specific fermentation and the activity of a specific living micro-organism (Garrison-Morton 2472). In Volume 53, Archibald Scott Couper's paper is a seminal work in organic chemistry. Three volumes bound as one. PASTEUR: At the request of a vintner from the north of France, Pasteur began to examine why alcohol becomes contaminated with undesirable substances during fermentation. Pasteur saw fermentation as a biological process and soon demonstrated that each sort of fermentation is linked to the existence of a specific microorganism or ferment -- a living being that can be studied by cultivation in an appropriate, sterile medium. This insight is the fundamental basis of microbiology, and it delivered the fatal blow to the doctrine of spontaneous generation, the theory held for twenty centuries that life… Read More

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1925. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF PAULI'S EXCLUSION PRINCIPLE giving a criterion for the electronic structure of atoms, and explaining the periodic table and the combining properties of the elements. Specifically, the Pauli exclusion principle states that no two "fermions" (elementary particles with half-integer spin such as electrons, protons and neutrons) may occupy the same "quantum state" (i.e., the same unique set of the quantum numbers) within an atom. This is one of the most important principles in physics, because electrons occupy shells at increasing distance from the nucleus and there are limits to the number of electrons that may occupy a given shell (2n2 electrons in the nth shell). This gives an atom a physical size, and this underpins the stability of matter. The electron is now known to have four quantum numbers, three of which ("shell," "subshell" and "orbital") relate to the location of the electron within the atom and were known by… Read More

1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF EIGHT RARE OFFPRINTS by Linus Pauling detailing his prominent contributions to the general understanding of the nature of the chemical bond, here bringing quantum mechanics to the solution of the nature of the chemical bonds that determine inorganic crystal structure. Collectively, these papers represent Pauling's first works after his 1928 finding detailing a set of rules for working out probable crystalline structures from the X-ray diffraction patterns. In that paper and in these, "Pauling was the first to enunciate an understanding of a physical interpretation of the bonds between - and the nature of - molecules and crystals from a chemical perspective" (Bragg, History of Science Website). ""The new field of x-Ray crystallography emerged after World War 1, where x-Rays reflected through crystals resulted in photographs. Easton, PA: National Academy of Sciences. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF THREE OF SEVEN PAPERS BY PAULING AND COREY ON THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF PROTEINS. A decade before x-ray crystallography first revealed the structures of proteins, Pauling and Corey deduced their main structural features: the 'alpha-helix,' the 'gamma helix' and the 'beta sheet.' Their work had the same significance for proteins as the Watson and Crick papers (published two years later) had for the structure of DNA. "Instead of tackling the structure of an entire protein, the two scientists' efforts centered on discrete bits of proteins -- tiny crystals made up of repeating units called amino acids. When numberous amino acids link together to form chains, the chains assemble into one of several different configurations. Because an entire protein can encompass hundreds of these configurations folded into a tangled and sometimes impenetrable bundle, Pauling and Corey focused on elucidating the structure of each configuration one by… Read More

London: Taylor and Francis, 1900. 1st Edition. BOUND FIRST EDITION OF A SEMINAL PAPER IN THE HISTORY OF STATISTICS, Pearson's 'chi-squared' goodness of fit test, "one of the most useful of all statistical tests" and "one of Pearson's greatest single contributions to statistical methodology" (DSB). Pearson had found "the exact chi-square distribution from the family of Gamma distributions" — the import of this being that statisticians could now use statistical methods that did not depend solely on the normal distribution to interpret their findings (Magnello, "Karl Pearson", Rutherford Journal, I, 2005-2006). Where Galton thought all "data had to conform to the normal distribution, Pearson emphasized that empirical distributions could take on any number of shapes" (ibid). His efforts would substantially raise the practice of mathematical statistics and "ushered in a new kind of decision making" (Huber-Carol, Goodness of Fit Tests, 10). 1877. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF A PAPER BY CHARLES SANDERS PEIRCE THAT IS WIDELY CONSIDERED "THE FIRST EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY WORK IN AMERICA" (Cadwallader, 1974). This 1877 investigation into the nature of color vision made Peirce "the first modern experimental psychologist on the American continent" (The Peirce Edition Project, Vol. 3). Peirce was one of the earliest practitioners of the randomized experiment and in this paper, employs that technique and publishes what was then called a psychophysical experiment on vision and color. Both the Young-Helmholtz color theory and Fechner's law are also discussed. In 1885, Peirce and Joseph Jastrow would publish an experiment using "a shuffled deck of playing cards to randomly determine the presentation order of stimuli used in a pychometric study;" this "possibly the first randomized experiment in social psychology (Handbook of the History of Social Psychology, 161). In late 1895, "a young French graduate student J. Perrin confirmed the corpuscular nature of cathode rays. In order to settle the difference between the opposing views of Goldstein, Hertz, and Lenard on the one hand, and Crookes and Thomson on the other hand, [Perrin in this experiment] collected the cathode rays in a metal cups, which acted as a Faraday cyliner, just before they struck the glass wall, and found that they gave a negative charge, which he measured with an electroscope. To confirm his experiment, Perrin showed that if the cathode rays are deflected by a magnet no charge is detected by the electroscope. He was also successful in carrying out the… Read More

Description:
London: Royal Society, 1953. 1st Edition. BOUND FIRST EDITION OF PIPPARD'S DISCOVERY OF THE COHERENCE LENGTH. "Loosely speaking, the coherence length can be viewed as the spatial distance over which the superconducting state (i.e., electron-electron pairing length scale) can exist" (Ray, Superconductors, 35). The significance of this is that, according to the theory, only electrons with a particular energy level contribute to superconductivity. This was a key breakthrough leading to the BCS theory of superconductivity. Professor Sir Brian Pippard was Cavendish Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge for the majority of his career. While at Cambridge and based upon his thesis work on the anomalous skin depth in dirty superconductors, Pippard proposed "that the character of superconductivity changes at short distances, below a scale he named the coherence length. Pippard showed that, at these short distances, the local London relation between current and vector potential is replaced by a… Read More

Description:
Leipzig: Barth, 1896. 1st Edition. MAX PLANCK ON THE PROPERTIES OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION. Full volume with original wraps bound in at the rear. This paper was first published in the Proceedings of the Prussian Academy in 1895 followed by this publication in 1896. As early as 1894, Planck expressed an interest in the thermodynamics of radiation, writing "there is hope that we will also be able to achieve a more detailed understanding of those electrodynamic processes that are directly conditioned by temperature — as in heat radiation in particular — without having to make the laborious detour through the mechanical explanation of electricity" (Planck, Antrittsrede, 3). In 1895, Max Planck submitted a paper — this paper — to the Prussian Academy. "Building upon Hertz's treatment of electric oscillations using Maxwell's theory, Planck analyzed the absorption and emission of electromagnetic waves by electric resonators of dimensions small relative to the wavelength; he regarded this… Read More
