The First edition signed by Paul also comes with a letter from the famous wife of critic Edmund Wilson-Elena Wilson. First edition: Edmund Wilson: A Study of Literary Vocation in Our Times. University Press, Urbana, Ill-1965, First Edition. Cover in very good condition and mylar. Interior bright and clean and signature of Sherman Paul on the inside fly. Includes letter by Elena Wilson to J. Marshall thanking him for his recollection of Edmund Wilson in a 'Punch and Judy' performance. Second volume is the 1966 'second printing'. Cover present but with a surface scratch and back torn with tattered edges and toning with stains. A nice companion to the first edition. It is rare that we have such memorable duplicates. A rare book set, plus letter.

William Lyon Phelps (January 2, 1865 New Haven, Connecticut - August 21, 1943 New Haven, Connecticut) was an American author, critic and scholar. He taught the first American university course on the modern novel. He was a well-known speaker who drew large crowds. He had a radio show, wrote a daily syndicated newspaper column, lectured frequently, and published numerous popular books and articles.

Phelps' father Sylvanus Dryden Phelps was a Baptist minister. William as a child was a friend of Frank Hubbard, the son of Langdon Hubbard, a lumber merchant who founded Huron City, Michigan. John Henry Nash (1871-1947), American printer and bibliophile, born Woodbridge, Canada. After learning the printer's trade, he emigrated to the United States in 1894. He eventually became professor of typography at the University of Oregon. A vital and vigorous personality in American printing he made beautiful books in Calfornia under patronage which has permitted him to work without too much consideration fo limits of time, materials and expense. A very nice copy of "When MIT was "Boston Tech" 1861-1916 published in 1954 by Samuel Cate Prescott with dust cover. Light toning to dust jacket, price clipped inside cover otherwise near fine. Signed by Prescott to: "Specially inscribed for my long-time friend, Professor Maynard A. Joslyn with the high regards of Samuel C. Prescott." What makes this inscription so interesting is that Joslyn was the father of revolutionizing the California wine making industry starting in 1933.
