Description:
Mostly Patagonia, 1890. Printing-out paper prints, the images measuring 3 1/4x4 1/2 to 4 1/4x6 inches, and the reverse, each with a caption, written on a label affixed to the mount below the prints. 4to, blue pictorial cloth. 1890s. In this bound photo album, forty-six photographs document a group traveling from pastoral locations in northern Argentina to breathtaking views at the southern tip of the continent. The photographs were taken by an accomplished photographer, and handwritten captions in English provide brief descriptions of the locations and people documented. Apparently a member of an exploration commission, the photographer and his team travel first from Bahia Brazil to Buenos Aires and La Pláta, then on to the southern tip of the continent, and back up the continent through remote lakes and mountains on both sides of the Chilean/Argentinian border. While the photographer's name and nationality are not clear from the album, there are two photographs with a Sr. Moreno, who is likely the… Read More

Description:
Havana: R. Testar, 1890. Albumen photograph on cardstock mount, image measuring 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches on 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inch mount. A view of an American warship in Havana harbor, likely taken prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Spain in early 1898. The photographers, Leach and Patterson of Calle San Rafael, published several views of Cuba at this time, mostly of bucolic scenes around Havana and its environs. The American cruiser is similar in design to the U.S.S. Maine with slight differences - two smokestacks instead of three. An excellent example with minor wear to mount and fine image.

Description:
Windsor, 1833. 8vo, 47 pp. Near Fine. Cyril Pearl was a Vermont-based pro-colonization abolitionist who feuded locally with William Lloyd Garrison on the subject of colonization and acted as a publishing agent in Vermont for the Boston-based The Colonizationist, and Journal of Freedom, a short-lived publication published from 1833-1834 by George W. Light in Boston. In this work, Pearl - writing anonymously - takes issue with Garrison's Thoughts on African Colonization pamphlet and makes a case for African colonization. We find little information on Pearl, save for a mention or two in correspondence relating to Garrison.

Description:
New York: H.H. Lloyd and Co, 1861. 8vo, green cloth, 164 pp. Slight odor else about fine. Elias Peissner was born in Bavaria and exiled from his country for his activism surrounding the war there, and eventually ended up in the United States at Union College where he taught languages and literature. "He also became involved in politics, calling for the North to resist Southern secession his 1861 book, The American Question. When the Civil War broke out that year, Peissner helped organize and train the Union College Zouaves, most of whose members later served as officers in the Union Army. In June 1862, Governor Morgan of New York gave Peissner permission to recruit a regiment and a commission as its colonel. The regiment entered service that September as the 119th New York Infantry. The regiment saw its first action in 1863 as part of XI Corps at the battle of Chancellorsville. The corps' position was turned by Stonewall Jackson's attack, and disaster ensued. Description:
San Francisco, 1905. Loose photographs in box, images measuring 5 x 7 inches. 251 Half-Tone images, generally fine condition, box torn with missing panel. Fine images and good-only box. Fine. James D. Givens had a studio in San Francisco's Presidio for many years, and traveled to the Philippines in 1903 on an Army transport ship, where he took photographs of the Philippine-American War. This collection, with Givens' studio's imprint on the box, contains a mix of Givens work as well as many photographs by Perley Fremont Rockett, and many photographs by uncredited photographers, copied and sold by Givens without attribution. According to an article in the Spring, 2002 issue of Prologue, Givens would publish several different later books claiming credit for other photographers' work. This collection - of which we find no record, save for a similar assemblage with a different title housed at Stanford - seems to be earlier, likely pre-1905. Despite the title on the box, all but a couple of images show… Read More

A collection of tintypes of Latin American subjects from the late nineteenth century. Tintype photography was quite uncommon in Latin America during the period, with photography dominated by the albumen, silver and printing out processes of the major urban studios. This is a nice group with several striking portraits.

New Orleans: Various Photographers, 1870. Twenty-four cartes-de-Visite and three ninth-plate tintypes, all bearing New Orleans photographers' marks to versos. Very good to fine. Very Good. A curated group of images of New Orleans subjects, with an emphasis on women, children and religious imagery, including one uncommon image of a rosary and another of the interior of a church. Most photographs document the city's wealthy residents at a time when elite culture changed due to the abolition of French instruction in schools and the general forces of reconstruction. The images include several with identified subjects. Overall an evocative group worthy of study by scholars of the city.

Description:
New York, 1860. An unusual image of a Zouave soldier in an outdoor setting, holding a horse. During the Civil War, roughly 95 Zouave regiments formed, adopting the names, uni-forms and sometimes fighting styles of the North African Zouave brigades. The bulk - about 70 of the regiments - fought for the Union cause. We were unable to determine anything else about this soldier, though the image was found in a New York estate. New York was home to two of the most famous Zouave brigades, the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry and the 11th New York Volunteer In-fantry. A nearly fine image with a slight crease, housed in a full case.

Paris: Charles Chevalier, 1854. First Edition. 12mo, wraps, 88 pp. A near fine copy with some wear to extremities of wraps and fine contents. Near Fine. A scarce early photographic manual by the anatomist Julien Fau, who was best known for his lithographic works on human anatomy. This is an early manual of the collodion process. Quite uncommon, with eleven copies held institutionally, five in North America. Little is known about Fau's involvement with photography, though given his interest in the human form, it would be fair to assume he may have employed it for the process of anatomical studies. An exceptionally clean copy, from the library of the noted collector Otto Oren Fisher. Roosens and Salu 6522.

Description:
Boston, 1930. Oblong quarto, 49 pp. With appx. 1,400 photos, most measuring less than an inch square, with roughly 175 in larger formats up to 3 ½ by 5 inches. Very Good. A wonderful labor of photographic love created by an unidentified young woman with ties to the Cabot family of Beacon Hill. The album, composed largely of tiny contact prints glued in neat grids. Off-kilter compositions - a portion of a steeple against the sky, the tail of a dog, etc. - are mixed in with more traditional landscapes, leading one to question whether the photographer had modernist aspirations (or just took a lot of pictures). The photographer is unknown, but our best guess is that it was someone who was a friend of Ellen Cabot of Beacon Hill, perhaps while both were students or just after. Ellen Cabot, the most frequent subject of the album, is shown in a variety of settings, often accompanied by her dog Prowler. Aerial photography, the New England coastline, camping, life in Cambridge and equestrian competition… Read More

Vermont, 1880. Albumen photograph. 15 ½ x 10 inches on a 19 x 14 inch cardstock mount. Very Good. A rare 19th century view of an insane asylum. The Vermont Asylum for the Insane, which later became the Brattleboro Retreat, was founded based on Quaker principles of moral treatment. The founder, Anna Hunt Marsh, was the first woman credited with starting a hospital for the mentally ill. The approach was based on English institutions such as The York Retreat. "Moral treatment," first developed by William Tuke in the 18th century, treated mental disorders as diseases and not character flaws or the results of sinning or mental depravity. This image is unrecorded, and would date to sometime before 1890 when the institution was renamed. Some uneven fading, otherwise well preserved. Mount toned at edges. Very good overall.

Plymouth, 1813. Plymouth, Devon, England: 21st July 1813. Folio, 7 pages (13 1/8 x 8 ¼ inches), duty blindstamp, small ink stamp to upper inner margin of the first page, two seals to the last page, signed twice by Galindo. Toned, some small repaired tears (using reversible archival ph-neutral paper-repair tape), very good to near fine. Very Good. An interesting document of privateering in the Peninsular war, this 'Public Instrument of Protest' documents a Portuguese captain and crew complaint (in detail) to an English notary. After sailing from Calcutta to Brazil and then from Rio to just outside of Lisbon, their ship, the 700-ton 'Oceano', was seized and comprehensively ransacked by a French privateer (the 'Lion' out of Lorient). Most of the crew and passengers were offloaded onto a passing American vessel, the 'Leda' bound for Lisbon. Meanwhile, the 'Lyon' escorted her prize towards the nearest French port, but before a friendly haven was reached they were both set upon by the brigantine HMS… Read More

Baton Rouge: Typographical Union Label, 1936. First Edition. Broadside, 16 ¾ x 9 ¼ inches. Some wear, a few small holes at creases, slight foxing, very good minus overall. A broadside advertising the Share Our Wealth Program, which had been championed by the late Huey Long prior to his death in 1935, printed when the program was under the direction of Gerald L.K. Smith, who was widely considered a political demagogue and who ran the program into the ground following Long's death. Long had made it his trademark piece of proposed legislation in his potential run for the presidency, proposing a progressive tax on wealthy Americans up to 100% of fortunes over 100 million dollars. Following his death, the program languished under the direction of Smith, who joined a third party coalition in support of William Lemke in 1936. Long's program is often credited in helping push Roosevelt leftward, with some historians positing that some of the New Deal programs were created in response to the political threat… Read More

Description:
V.P., 1940. With fifty-eight letters from Newton Baker, 1924-1937. Generally fine condition. Ellen Gowen Hood was active in the Democratic party at both the local and national levels. An obituary from the Philadelphia Daily News in 1970 described her as "one of the earliest local advocates of women in politics." She was the chairman of the Democratic Women's Luncheon Club of Philadelphia for 20 years, and had regular correspondence with women such as Edith Bolling Wilson and Eleanor Roosevelt. Democratic women's clubs became active across the country after the 19th amendment passed in 1920, and the democratic party sought to mobilize women voters. As chairman of the Democratic Women's Luncheon Club of Philadelphia, Hood organized events with prominent political speakers and then had the speeches printed in book format. Without Hood's side of the correspondence, we don't get insight into her philosophy of women's participation in politics. We do, however, get a sense for the role that the club… Read More
