Description:
1970. Gouache on composition board. Signed, "Dom Pacitti" Striking confrontation with an early 70s Ford grille. This is a dramatic, confrontational drawing by Dom Pacitti of the type of hidden headlight grille popular in the early 70's. Though the idea of concealing headlights had been around since before World War II, it only became popular in the mid-60's at the same time intricate chrome grilles were catching on. Here against a dark brown background, the proposed Ford (XL?) swerves to avoid hitting the viewer (seated on a curb) showing its bright new bumper, grille and right front fender as well as a glimpse of the right side. The diagonal positioning allows the artist to maximize the dramatic display of beauty and agility.

Description:
1980. Mixed media on paper, cut out and laid on a larger sheet. Signed, "Dom Pacitti" The epitome of the American sports car by car stylist, Dom Pacitti. That car racing has influenced car design is as interesting as it is obvious because the modern American sports car itself embodies not just aerodynamics but also the sense of danger, the antagonism of competition, the thrill of triumph and superiority of motor racing. This smooth, sleek, dark car conveys an image of latent power that is as unmistakably American as an extravagant science fiction movie. Its dark blue with purple highlights and black windows imply stealth and unsularity, as well as impeccable craftsmanship.

Wolverhampton & London: R.Paddy and F.Jukes, 1793. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Francis Jukes, with engraved title and explanatory text beneath image in English and French on wove paper. A very fine pastoral scene and an excellent example of the picturesque, beautifully printed in colours and finished by hand The text beneath the image reads: "Dudley Castle is said to have been built by one Dodo, or Dudo, a Saxon, about the year 700; so that its present appellation of Dudley is a corruption of his name. This Castle stands on the summit of a Rockey [sic.] Hill, whose sides are beautifully wooded. It commands a most extensive prospect over five Counties, and into Part of Wales. It belongs to Lord Ward, whose Father was by King George the 3d.... created Viscount Dudley and Ward of Dudley." The still-standing ruin was built in the 12th century. It is one of several aquatint views by Francis Jukes of medieval architecture in advanced decay greatly enjoyed by the new Romantic… Read More

Description:
Paris: Imprimerie National, 1793. Together 284 works bound in 6 volumes, 8vo. (8 x 4 3/4 inches). The Paine items 10pp. and 8pp. Early half calf and period pastepaper boards, flat spine in five compartments, red and black morocco labels. A pair of rare works by Paine which would lead to his imprisonment in France: bound within an extraordinary collection of revolutionary pamphlets concerning the fate of Louis XVI. With the French Revolution well underway, Edmund Burke published a sharp critique of the events in France. Taken aback and sharply disagreeing with his friend's views, Paine published the first part of Rights of Man, which would become among the most published works of the 18th century with upwards of 200,000 copies printed. His publication of the even more revolutionary second part of Rights of Man following the seizure of the French King and his family would lead the British government to charge Paine with libel, forcing him to leave England for Paris in September 1792, never to return.… Read More

Description:
London: Nourse, Vaillant, Millar, Rocque & Sayer, 1754. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in very good condition. A highly decorative map of the Americas, evincing Palairet's uniquely elegant aesthetic style This artistically virtuous map embraces the entirety of North and South America, and also takes in the western extremities of Europe and Africa. South America is very well defined, and is divided into the various Spanish domains and Portuguese Brazil. North America is depicted on the eve of the Seven Years War. The English colonies running from Georgia up to Nova Scotia hug the Atlantic seaboard, while the massive French empire consisting of Canada and Louisiana extends through the heart of the continent. Quebec City, the capital of New France, is noted on the map. In the west, California is correctly shown to be a peninsula, while the Pacific Northwest is shown to be an enigma. Mexico and the numerous islands of the Caribbean are also portrayed. The map is adorned with a elegant,… Read More

Cinncinnati: J.A. & U.P. James, 1847. 8vo. (7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches). iv, 9-189pp. First edition, second issue, with corrections made on pages 31 and 121 and without the errata slip tipped in at page 189. This copy with t.p. date altered. Original sheep. Skillfully rebacked with black morocco lettering piece. One of the most complete accounts of life on the Oregon Trail. The tide of overland immigration which engulfed Oregon in 1843 was followed by even larger waves in subsequent years. The overland migration of 1845 was one of the largest, and it produced one of the most complete accounts of wagon trail life, in this work by Joel Palmer. His journal is the only contemporary account by a participant in the 1845 migration, which numbered some 3,000 people. "Most reliable of the early guides to Oregon; in addition, the best narrative by a participant in the overland migration of 1845, which more than doubled the population of Oregon" - Howes Also included in the work is a letter from Rev. Spalding about… Read More

Mexico: Imprenta de Don Felipe de Zuniga y Ontiveros, calle del Espiritu Santo, 1787. Small quarto. [28], 344pp. 1 engraved portrait, 1 folding engraved map. (Abrasion on top edge of text block). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (lightly rubbed, ties lacking). Housed in a half morocco and cloth folding box, spine gilt. A primary source for information on the history of early California. An outstanding book on early California. Palou was a disciple of Father Junipero Serra (1713-1784) for many years, and his work is still the principal source for the life of the venerable founder of the California missions. "The letters from Father Serra to Father Palou [provide] interesting details on the various Indian tribes and their manners and customs, together with descriptions of the country...This work has been called the most noted of all books relating to California" (Hill). Description:
London, 1714. Broadsheet. 2pp., including printed docket title on verso. Ornamental initial. Disbound. Small folio. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Trimmed close, with slight loss to the first line of caption title and docket title. Minor foxing. The most enlarged of three editions of this title recorded by Hanson, who assigns all three a date of 1712. While Parliament did introduce certain paper taxes that year (to which this document appears to refer), this petition also refers to the "late" wars, which indicates it was actually published following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Its discovery within a large bound collection of similar documents, nearly all of which may be dated conclusively to 1714 or 1715, and its reference to a "High Duty Impos'd Two Years Since upon Stock in Hand" strongly suggest a 1714 printing date. The petition protests new paper taxes, charging that the already-existing "Excessive Tax upon Paper, hath already much hindred the Printing of Learned and Useful… Read More
