Description:
Vintage Colored Albumen Photograph of Inside the Palace in Teheran, Iran. Printed in 1887 by E. Sangleboeuf. 6.7" x 9." glued on cardboard. This photograph of inside the Iranian palace is heightened with gouache, a versatile painting technique which uses dense intensive colors. The gouache paint enhances the photo with a quiet brilliancy making the features of the room pop with subtle color. In the photograph we can see the geometric details of the window etchings standout in hues of blue and green, while the furniture, rugs, and floral arrangements are lightly stroked with colors in red, brown, blue, gold, and grey. The room itself is richly furnished with various sitting areas, candelabras, seven floral arrangments, and what appears to be a small pond in the center of the room. With some areas of age related foxing. Overall a rare and beautiful vintage photograph in very good condition.

[Blaxploitation] Pam Grier Coffy Movie Archive of 3 Related Items from the film. American International Pictures, Inc., 1973. This archive includes two U.S. large lobby cards and one vibrant Japanese-edition broadside. Lobby cards measure 10" x 14", the broadside 10" x 7". Coffy was a 1973 American Blaxplotation film centering upon a femme fatale's vengeance against a heroin dealer who birthed her sister's addiction. This film, among others, would help boost Grier's career as a lead Black female femme fatale. Researcher Karen Ross asserts that the film "let black audiences enjoy the sight of heroes kicking the white system and winning even while condemning the violence and recognized the implausibility. It allowed blacks the ultimate escape to cheer on the heroine that fought corruption and crime and then leave the theatre to be blighted by the racism in society." One lobby card captures Grier in a plunge top, bold jewelry, and voluminous hair, alongside co-star Robert Doqui. Doqui sports flashy…

[African-American Film], [Blaxploitation] Pam Grier Archive of 6 Lobby Card Photographs. American International Pictures, 1973 - 1975. Each lobby card measures 10" x 8". Films include Coffy, Friday Foster and Sheba, Baby. Each of the films were noteworthy and paved the way for Black women in leading action roles. Grier's stylish look and attitude made her an iconic figure in 1970s film, especially in the Blaxploitation genre. Her groovy 70's look, quick wit, and sharp tongue were all emphasized in these films, reshaping the often negative, stereotypical portrayals of Black women in its time. Two Lobby Cards in color show Grier in Sheba, Baby, both vibrant and vintage showcasing her 70s aesthetic. In one, she appears on the boat wearing her iconic cut-off Hawaiian shirt. Two Lobby Cards in color from Friday Foster feature Grier, one in her pink suit standing next to Yaphet Kotto. Grier appears in one of two black and white Lobby Cards from Coffy, wearing a cocktail dress and standing next to Robert…

Description:
[Panama Canal] [Early Photography] Two large albumen photographs of the construction of the Panama Canal, 1912. Photographs are pasted down to grey cardstock with captions and articles describing the imagery below. Photos measure 11" x 14". The building of the Panama Canal was not met with ease as the former French owned project was abandoned due to lack of investment and a high worker mortality rate, and the grappling of territory between Panama, Columbia, and the United States. In 1903, Panama gained it's independence and as the United States recognized this, Roosevelt used buying power to his advantage to funnel millions of dollars towards Panama and the funding of this project. These two photographs are early large scale displays of the massive amounts of land and infrastructure that went into this long awaited project. One photograph shows the Culebra Cut in June, 1912. The article pasted to the front states that "To remove the 105,000,000 cubicyards of earth from the backbone of the Americas…

Description:
Photo album showing subjects on water and land mainly in tropical location, possibly Panama. Early 1900s. Black leather album measuring 10 x 7 inches with photos mounted to black pages. 86 pages. This album centers around a crew of seafaring American men on a small yacht in what appears to be Panama in the early 1900s. In a few photos, we can see the construction of a major canal, which could very likely be the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal project was taken over by American engineers in 1904 and was completed in 1914, which seems to coincide with the time when these photos are taken. Visible in a few photos is the American yacht ensign flag that consists of the 13 stripes and and an anchor with stars circling it. This flag signified that the vessel was a "pleasure boat", meaning it wasn't for military or commercial purposes. Many of the photos also show groups of indigenous children and some adults. One image shows a small boy without clothes standing in a handcrafted canoe that has come ashore a…

Pankurst, E. Sylvia. "The Suffragette. The History of the Women's Militant Suffrage Movement 1905-1910." New York: Sturgis & Walton, 1911. First American edition. (First UK edition was published the same year.) 32 photo-illustrated portraits and images of important events related to women's suffrage. Octavo. Original green cloth boards. No dust jacket. Sylvia Pankhurst was the daughter of Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) founder Emmeline Pankhurst. Like her mother, Sylvia fought with conviction for working class women and children (particularly those living in the East End) and was devoted to finding welfare support for these vulnerable populations. This work was published in 1911--early in the militant suffrage movement--and details the trials and inhumane treatment that suffrage activists faced, including arrests, trials, and the tortuous ordeal of force-feeding, which she accompanies with a half-tone and medical evidence of the dangers it presents. Half-tone images throughout book depict…

Description:
Large military photo archive of the 11th Airborne Division "Arctic Angels", stationed in postwar Japan, with many photos of paratroopers jump training and drills on base. Dating primarily from 1947. Consists of 217 black and white photos ranging in size from 2.25" x 2.5" to 4.75" x 6.5". Based on a ticket to the "EM Club", a socializing spot for the men part of the Yamagata Military Government Team, we glean that the photographer and main subject of many of these photos is a Jeff C. Wall, likely from North Dakota. The 11th Airborne, like other notable paratrooper divisions such as the 101st Airborne, was initially a reserve unit that didn't see deployment until June 1944, around D-Day. However, unlike the 101st, the 11th was transferred to the Pacific Theater, where they dropped into intense combat in the Battle of Luzon in the Philippines. They led the charge into Manila and broke through strongly fortified Japanese positions, sustaining heavy casualties. They also devised a heroic prisoner breakout…
