Good: light vertical crease to wrappers and all leaves, some internal soil spots; owner notation to title page; offsetting to pages where card laid in. This is an exceptionally rare ritual book for a little-known African American fraternal/benevolent society. While its text is fairly plain and standard for the genre, the book is evidence of one woman's effort to build a Black benevolent society and/or defraud its members. The book lays out instructions for conducting the rituals bestowing first, second and third degrees onto members of the Supreme Union of Ethiopia [SUR]. Using public records and newspapers.com this seemingly anonymous organization springs to life with a fascinating history. [Columbus, Ohio?]: N.P., 1943. Good. Single sheet, folded thrice, measuring 6" x 4 1/8" folded, opens to 16½" x 12". One side contains an eight panel pamphlet, the other a small poster. Good: heavily worn with moderate dust soiling to cover panel; tiny separations at edges; a few holes at intersecting folds. This is a re-election campaign pamphlet targeted to African Americans created by either a Black author or an African American organization we cannot uncover. One side is a brochure with text that listed the general accomplishments of mayor Floyd F. Green, included a list of nine African Americans he appointed to government posts, and a short one page essay, "Our Place In Columbus." While we have learned nothing of the author, the title of the essay, along with text such as "no city has contributed more to the uplift of OUR race," leads us to believe that either Parker was African American, and/or the pamphlet was the product of a Black political organization. Los Angeles, California: Los Angeles Times, 1980. Very good. Three posters, each measuring 18" x 23". Very good: one tiny tear to edge of one map, light foxing in the margin of another; else minimal wear and light creasing to edges. This is a set of three pictorial maps commissioned for the Los Angeles Bicentennial celebration and originally printed in the Los Angeles Times' Home magazine in 1980. They depict 300 years of Los Angeles area history, though the final hundred had yet to occur. The artist, Cathy Pavia, is a longtime art instructor and freelance illustrator for advertising and magazines. She also created the art for several books, including the Cathy and Company children's book series and Joey Green's The Zen of Oz: Ten Spiritual Lessons from Over the Rainbow. Malden, Mass: [Jacob W. Powell], 1937. Very good. 9¼" x 6¼". Blue pebbled cloth, title gilt. Pp. xvi, 136 + 60 [of 60] photographically illustrated plates interspersed. Very good: light wear, a hint of toning to leaves. This is a detailed and heavily illustrated travelogue written by an AME Zion Elder and religious educator, Jacob W. Powell. The first three pages of the book include a detailed chronology of Powell's life, along with his numerous certifications related to religious teaching. From it, we learn that Powell was born a Methodist Episcopalian in 1866 and converted to the AME Zion Church in Boston in 1881. He worked as a stenographer for a number of religious and civil clients before becoming ordained a Deacon and later Elder. Powell served as Pastor of a few AME Zion and Baptist churches and, according to this book's dedication, taught over 4,000 students during his 54-year career. Very good: wrappers toned at extremities and lightly soiled with a bit of corner wear; light dust-soiling throughout. This is a strong and poetic appeal on behalf of Lithuania's fight for independence, relating current and former atrocities perpetrated by the Nazi and Soviet occupations of the nation. It was written by a noted Lithuanian American priest and author in Chicago and the text is entirely in Lithuanian. Lithuania is a small European nation that was dominated by Russia's invasions throughout the 18th century and by a subsequent century of wars between Germany and Russia on its soil. Due to its long history of being governed by outside forces, it was a victory when it declared independence at the end of World War I.
