Contemporary leather repairs at spine, reinforced front hinge. Previous ownership label on front free endpaper. Front free endpaper previously bonded to front endpaper, leaving a residual mark and small hole. Faint toning throughout with occasional foxing. Housed in custom green cloth slipcase, title in gilt on spine. An attractive presentation. The Ship Oswego was based in Hudson, New York, and commanded by Captain Judah Paddock. In 1800, it sailed for the Cape Verde Islands to load salt for New York, with 14 people on board. The ship was lost, but all 14 hands made it to shore in Lisbon. Decorative gilt turn-ins. Extremities and spine rubbed, corners and spine tips lightly worn. Upper corner of front cover slightly bowed. Scratch to leather on back cover. Endpapers cracked at hinges, but binding is solid. Marginalia, primarily in the section with the poem "Don Juan." Frontispiece portrait with tissue cover, plus 12 illustrated plates. Palmer flew 158 combat missions with the 100th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group during World War II. He was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen from 1942-1945. He flew P-39's, P-40's, P-47's and P-51's, logging 400 hours of combat hours during the war. In retirement he wrote Flying With Eagles: Memoirs of an Original Tuskegee Airman. Walter Palmer died in 2009.
