First edition of this justly famous children's book with anthropomorphised kangaroo characters - 'perhaps the best known story entirely devoted to the kangaroo' (Robert Holden 'The Mint Exhibition' 1985). Twelve stories of kangaroos told in verse with many small drawings in sepia and twelve beautifully printed, full-page, partially-coloured plates. Quarto, full colour pictorial boards, edge rubbing, corner wear, chipping of paper at spine ends and along spine edges, two pages with minor nicks at page edge, clean and bright, a very good copy indeed overall.

Oxford, 1853. The second volume of a series begun by renowned antiquary Hudson Turner. Author, John Henry Parker, also edited 'The Glossary of Architecture'. Covers medieval towns, colleges, and everything from gate houses to chambers. "The colleges of Oxford and Cambridge have very few buildings so early as the fourteenth century; but the treasury of Merton college, Oxford, belongs to the time of Edward the First, and is a very valuable example of a perculiar class of buildings, being built entirely of stone, with vaults to the lower rooms and passages, and a stone roof to the upper chamber; there is no wood employed in any part of the structure, and it is consequently fire proof..." Octavo, navy cloth, rebacked, page-edges browned and some foxing of the prelims, illustrated with 122 engravings, occasional underlining in red pencil, a good sound copy of a rather wonderful book nonetheless.

Esther Paterson was born in 1892 in Carlton in Melbourne and was a student at the National Gallery of Victoria from 1907 -1912. Throughout her career, she contributed cartoons to The Bulletin Magazine, Punch, and The Argus and her portraits of civilian officers were exhibited at The Australian War Museum. Her first published collection, Aussie Girls presents a stylish and sultry line up of illustrations of attractive women interacting from on high with doll-size men in uniform. Paterson, niece of John Ford Paterson, was also well known as a landscape painter. In this work she combined her skill as an illustrator and her wit as a commercial artist to amuse post-war Australian society, now used to seeing women in more assertive and independent roles. Elizabeth (Betty) Deans Paterson (1894-1970) was an artist, cartoonist and book illustrator, born in Melbourne. The talented and beloved younger sister of Esther Paterson, with whom she often collaborated, one of Paterson's other most notable collaborations was with Australian author Ivan Southall. Together, they worked on several books, including "Ash Road" (1965), which won the Children's Book of the Year Award in 1966. Paterson's distinctive illustrations helped to capture the essence of the stories and engage young readers. In addition to her work as an illustrator, Betty Paterson also had a successful career as a cartoonist. She created comic strips for publications such as The Australian Home Beautiful, The Australian Woman's Mirror, The New Triad, The Australian Women's Weekly and The Bulletin, showcasing her talent for visual storytelling and humor. The book is also a good example of chromolithographic printing of the period. Paris: Paul Dupont et L'Auteur, 1869. First Edition. The Crayfish: Manners, Reproduction, Education" by Pierre Carbonnier. Born in Bergerac in the Dordogne region of France in 1829, Pierre Carbonnier was a French scientist specialising in marine biology and exotic sea creatures. Carbonnier founded one the earliest aquariums in the world in Paris in 1850 and succeeded in breeding a species of fish from China called the macropod or Paradise fish, the first species of tropical fish to be bred in Europe. For services to his extraordinary field of expertise, Carbonnier was awarded a knighthood in the Legian of Honour. Octavo, illustrated paper covers, 200 pages + advertisments, 2.5 cm tear at head of spine, small blue mark on the back cover, the occassional fox mark throughout, a very good copy.

London: Eragny Press, 1902. Pissaro, Lucien. With woodcut borders and initials by Lucien Pissaro and three wood-engravings by T. Sturge Moore. The Eragny Press was the private concern of Lucien Pissaro and his wife Esther, established with the assistance of Charles Shannon and Charles Ricketts of the Vale Press. Sturge Moore wrote on the books printed by Eragny: "If they are precious, honour them, be liberal for them. We must have fewer then; but those few shall be beautiful on the table, on the shelf, in the hand; while we muse on the meaning, the eye shall rest happily on the page where fair proportions have been sought and established between margin and text, between type and page." (Franklin 'The Private Presses' p. 98). Edition of 200 copies. Slim octavo, original decorated papered boards, spine ends show a little wear, bookplate, a very good copy.

Melbourne: Melville & Mullen Pty. Ltd, 1919. First Edition. Story of two children who spend the day fishing on the lagoon. Small quarto, bound in the original illustrated boards, 14 pages, full pages colour illustrations, early gift inscription and bookplate, a very good copy.

London: Harvey and Darton, 1830. First Edition. First edition: considered the first novel of Australia. This is an exemplary copy of the very scarce first edition, bound with the advertisements in the publisher's roan-backed marbled boards of the first issue. In the novel, the affable Dudleys are forced to emigrate, whereupon they purchase several hundred acres on the Hunter River. Here they grow crops and tend their "pet Merinos", which had travelled with them across from France. Much of the action centres on their interaction with First Australians, and the eponymous Alfred becomes particularly close to a younger boy called "Mickie" from a local community, who saves him from a treacherous fall in the bush, and becomes a sort of voluntary personal valet, assistant, and sidekick. There is illness, and adversity, and a lively description of the dangers of a kangaroo hunt, but on the whole the European settlers are enchanted with New South Wales.
