Xantes Pagnino was a 15th-century Dominican friar known for his studies in biblical philology. While his edition of the Hebrew Bible is considered his best work, he published a biblical thesaurus which was written to aid in the reading of the Hebrew texts. This 1578 printing of Pagnino's Hebrew/Latin "Thesaurus linguæ sanctæ" was published by Christopher Plantin.

1799Practical House Carpenter 146 Architecture Plates Construction Plans Pain

William Pain was an 18th-century English architect known for his extensive pattern and construction books. He designed churches, facades, columns, staircases, decorative ceilings and moldings, fireplaces and much more, all of which is featured in his 'Practical House Carpenter'.

This 1799 edition of Pain's 'Practical House Carpenter' features the entirety of the illustrated plates – an exquisite collection of Pain's own etchings and design patterns.

This tome also features a curious inclusion of a volume from J Taylor's "Catalogue of Modern Books on Architecture" – a short pamphlet not originally associated with Pain's famous treatise.

Thomas Paine's political activism in the late 18th-century was vitally important to many of the successes of the American Revolution. He was responsible for some of the most important propaganda pamphlets at the start of the war which inspired American rebels in 1776. 'Common Sense' alone is considered the all-time best American pamphlet, in fact, John Adams is known to have said "without the pen of the author of 'Common sense,' the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.'

In 1925, an impressive printing of the life and works of Paine was published in New Rochelle, New York. Notably, this edition was edited by famed scientist Thomas Edison.

'On Incredible Things' is a collection of ancient Greek myths written by Palaephatus. While no record of an author named Palaephatus ever lived, scholars are unable to properly identify the true author of these myths. Each of the sections of this work describe an amazing feat of Greek mythology followed by a statement of believability or authenticity. The work is filled with accounts of miracles, monsters and dragons, and mythical creatures, and much more. Interestingly, there is little mention of Greek gods making them more human than god-like.
This 1649 edition of Palaephatus was published by the famed Dutch publishing company Elzevier. Edited and translated into Latin by Cornelius Tollius.

A scarce printing of William Paley's famous Christian apologetics work, 'Natural Theology'. A scientific and philosophical treatise, this title is commonly referenced amongst scholars when discussing the history and development of the modern understanding of scientific evolution. The HMS Rosario was an important gunship in the Royal Navy in the 1860s and 70s best-known for its fight against illegal kidnapping, or blackbirding, slaves from the South Seas islands. Palmer wrote a biographical sketch of his time on the Rosario and told of his encounters with slave-runners and kidnappers.

A rare, 19th-century traditional Hebrew text printing of the 'Chovot HaLevavot' or 'The Duties of the Heart'.

'Duties of the Heart' was written by 11th-century Rabbi Bahya ibn Paquada – a book which discusses unity with God, characteristics and attributes of God, Jewish worship practices, Jewish law, asceticism, and the immortality of the soul.
Hebrew texts from this era are considered quite rare, but this edition was published in Vilnius, Lithuania while it was under control of the Russian Empire. Nearly half of the population in Vilnius was Jewish in the second-half of the 19th-century so it is unsurprising to find Hebrew books printed in Vilnius.

Claude Paradin was a 16th-century French heraldic and emblematic writer most known for his illustrated historical works. His most influential work was 'Devises Heroiques', an illustrated version of the Old Testament. Each episode is illustrated by a woodcut and is paired with a short French poem which mirrors similar emblem publications on the Bible that were published in Paris and Lyon in the 16th-century.
