Gettysburg, PA: J. E. Wible Printer, 1890. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original marble paper boards half bound with leather to spine and corners. Spine is banded with gilt text. Exterior shows spotting and soiling along with scuffing, edges and corners show wear. The text pages are tight and the only issue found with the internal binding is a thin crack and pulling at the front board. Paper is toned due to age and there is some light foxing and spotting present. The front pastedown contains a bookplate from Pennsylvania College. This is the only markings found to indicate this. No handwriting or signatures, no other markings. The bookplate may just be for faculty reference but we are considering this an ex library copy because of it.

Inspecting the pages there was one or two that had corner creases were the page was folded and then straightened out. The bookplate may just be for faculty reference but we are considering this an ex library copy because of it.

The reason for the low condition grade is because this is an ex-library copy, though there is only one small marking. The internal binding is good and pages are clean. No signatures or bookplates. On the title page, near the lower right corner, is embossed " Library of Mich. Univ.". The rear end page and pastedown are clean with only foxing and toning present. Exterior spine also has a mark about 2 inches from the bottom where it is likely a label once was. Pages are toned due to age and foxing is present, though mainly limited to the end pages. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues at boards and text pages are tight. Front end page shows the names of the original owners, one is in pain and the other is in pencil. No other markings found in the book, no bookplates, no library markings. Foxing is present throughout with some pages quite spotted - though the rear end pages are the worst. The main title contains 349 pages along with another 36 pages of advertisements (mainly examples of other educational works). Title page states 11th edition. The book exterior grades as just G but interior is VG. Overall grade is G+.

Yellow cloth boards with red pictorial text on front, text on spine. No handwriting or bookplates noted. Pages show various degrees of toning to do quality of paper used. Dust jacket shows heavy staining due to somebody who reinforced the underside with masking tape many years ago. The glue from the tape has bled through to the front of the dust jacket, and has also affected the pastedowns and end pages to a lesser degree. Book condition is very good plus in a fair dust jacket. The original price of 4.00 net still present on the front flap. The book was removed from our store shelves and packed away several decades ago. The dust jacket shows shelf wear, mainly bumping and small tears to the edges. Yellow cloth boards underneath also show very slight toning to the edges along with a minor bump in the upper left corner. The interior the book is what you would expect for a new book, even though it is 50 years old. The pages are clean and the binding is tight and the only markings in the book is on the front end page where our store price was once penciled in the corner and then later erased. The condition grades of the book and dust jacket were lowered because of handling wear while in one of our stores.

The exterior shows a lot of fading, particularly to the spine. Edges and corners show bumps/light wear. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. Pale yellow end pages in front and rear are free of any handwriting or bookplates, no library markings etc. The second front end page has a small name (Latimer Smalls) signature very lightly, and ornately, written in pencil. This could easily be erased. No other handwriting found in the book. Pages show only minor scattered foxing spots here and there but the end pages and pastedowns show a heavier toning.
