Vintage (circa 1970) vernacular photograph by Earl Palmer, a Virginia photographer who spent 50 years photographically documenting everyday life in Appalachia. University of Kentucky professor of Appalachian studies Harry Caudill said of Palmer: "Palmer has given us the best view we will ever have of life and work in the Southern Appalachians. . . . His magnificent collection of photographs preserves the old way of life for us to study and ponder." Palmer's photographs are now housed in the Earl Palmer Appalachian Photograph and Artifact Collection at Virginia Tech. An excellent study of his work can be found in the book by Jean Haskell Speer, The Appalachian Photographs of Earl Palmer, published by the University of Kentucky Press in 1990. The effect of this act was to amend the American Prohibitory Act of 1776 to to allow the resumption of trade betwenn Britain and those parts of the American colonies that remained under British control. The Prohibitory Act had been the final straw that led to the American Revoltion, but if Parliament thought the 1780 revisions would reverse British fortunes in the colonies, they would be disappointed: The Restoration of Trade Act was too little and too late. The signed photo was a premium given to some of Chicago's Lyric Opera "Friends" who donated during the 1982 Operathon. Accompanying the photo is a letter from the Operathon Committee explaining that the autographed photo was a substitute for a promised signed Pavarotti album, which was not available because the singer had cancelled his scheduled Chicago performance, as he was wont to do. Description:
London: William S. Orr & Co., 1848. This is not a complete book--it is a single sheet containing an original antique hand-colored botanical print. Joseph Paxton was perhaps the most significant 19th century English botanist, the designer of the famed Crystal Palace, and the editor of Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants. This print is from the 14th volume of that magazine, published in 1848. Drawn and lithographed by Samuel Holden, it is a superb brilliantly-colored example of the flowers in the magazine. The lithograph is accompanied by the original text pages explaining the origin, cultivation, and uses of the flower. The print is clean and bright, with a hint of toning of the background and the usual stab holes along the binding edge.. First Edition. Paper. Collectible-Fine. Illus. by Samuel Holden. 9" by 6 3/8".
