Thirty-one engravings, all clipped from issues of Памятная книжка (Pamaiatnaia knizhka), an annual almanac of military, naval, imperial court and civil officials, published in Saint Petersburg by Военной Типографий (The Military Press). Each annual contained six to ten plates, mostly of places in the empire outside of Russia proper, reflecting contemporary Russian expansionism. During the period of this album, all the engravings in the almanacs were executed by English engravers whose work appears in English view books. All were based on paintings by prominent "Russian artists". Very faint rubber stamp, "Record Division, War Department, Rebel Archives." Parrish & Willingham 2315.War Secretary James Seddon castigates Treasury Secretary George Trenholm for currency policies that contribute to poor military morale and desertion. Trenholm's response is rather lame.

Real photograph printed in gold on a lacquered wooden board, from the Yokohama studio of Mizuno Hanbei, circa 1895. Mizuno patented this process that used a photosensitive adhesive of potassium bichromate, gum arabic and honey to attach gold dust to lacquer. The photograph of geisha and maiko relaxing on a Kyoto riverside terrace was taken by Tamamura Kozaburo. Mizuno's stenciled stamps on reverse.Photo measures 11 x 8 inches, mounted to a lacquered frame measuring 17.5 x 13.75 inches. Frame cracked along corner diagonals, else all in very good condition.

Off-print from Novyi Zhurnal Innostrannoi Literatury, where the novel was printed serially earlier in 1898. Later in 1898 this translation was published by Novyi Zhurnal in a smaller, more conventional book format. At the end of 1898 a different translation was published in a different periodical and then in book format. WorldCat locates this translation only in the smaller format, a single copy in Poland.War of the Worlds has possibly had more influence on Russian literature and culture than any other novel in the English language. At the time of the Revolution, Wells was among the most popular foreign writers in Russia -- second only to Verne.
