In this book, Padín, a mail artist and poet, directs his ire not at the military dictatorship controlling his home country, but at the American companies that continued to conduct business with Uruguay, despite sanctions instituted by the United States government. In her examination of this book, Michaëla de Lacaze cogently writes: "After tearing open an envelope, the work's first North American recipients might have been amused to discover yet another mysterious package - the surprise birthday present depicted on the booklet's cover. A very fine album of 12 paintings (the well-known "set of 12" format) of women's vulvas, mostly with penises inserted. Many of the scenes are obviously post-coital. The details of the pubic hair and sexual organs are very beautifully painted in vivid colors. One of the images depicts a very young woman masturbating, and another shows a man's hand stimulating his partner. In fine condition, preserved in an attractive silk brocade patterned chitsu.

A beautiful album of finely rendered drawings of bamboo, accompanied by explanatory text. There has been a long tradition in both China, since the eighth century, and Japan of illustrating bamboo, with much thought given to composition and the painting of the stems, knots, branches, and leaves. A number of treatises were written on the subject. This handsomely painted manuscript contains many illustrations, all finely painted or brush-drawn, of bamboo. Following the title, there are two leaves, which are somewhat soiled, illustrating the yin and yang of the three variations of bamboo painting. A very rare edition of this collection of documents relating to seven men and their actions during the Imjin War and the Manchu invasion of Korea in 1636. The invasions of Korea, first by the Japanese in the 1590s and then by the Manchus in the 1620s and 1630s, were important moments in the course of events that led to the rise of the Manchu Qing empire in continental East Asia. The large-scale fighting and movement of troops from Japan and China into the Korean peninsula in the late 16th century mark a watershed in Korean history. The cost of the wars also severely weakened the Chinese Ming dynasty, which eventually collapsed in 1644, ushering in an entirely new balance of power in the region. A rare calligraphic copybook, using rubbings of inscriptions carved in stone. The rubbings are from various pieces of famous calligraphy, including those of Injo (1595-1649, r. 1623-49), king of Chosŏn. Various styles of calligraphy are demonstrated. One leaf each is bound-in at the front and back of the book. These leaves contain printed Buddhist texts and appear to be printer's waste, used to protect the main body of the book. First edition of a Paracelsian rarity. Paracelsus' commentaries on the first five of Hippocrates' Aphorisms had been published the previous year in Cologne. The present edition comprises his commentaries on all 25 aphorisms of the first section, and on six of the second. They are followed by treatises on the medical uses of corals and the herbs hypericum (St. John's worts) and persicaria (peachwort). A slightly different version of the section on hypericum was published in the same year by Adam von Bodenstein (Sudhoff 95). In his preface the anonymous editor gives what he calls an impartial discussion of Paracelsian ideas. A very rare catalogue published by the pARTner group to recapitulate their activities in 1984 and '85, some of which involved correspondence art; according to WorldCat, no copies outside of Poland. The collective included Jacek Bukowski, Janusz Byszewski, Blanka Gul-Olszewska, Eugeniusz Józefowski, and Wieslaw Karolak. Many of the projects presented here touched upon art education of children; for example, one entailed the establishment of a reading room. From the introduction: "'pARTner' program clearly determines the need of creativity in human life, it shows possibilities of conveying sublime contents of education for creativity into the language of artistic and paraartistic practice." Most of the texts are in parallel Polish and English. Near fine; a little wear, probably from mailing. With the original mailing envelope neatly folded and laid-in.

From the final leaf: "Nijo tamaya cho Murakami Heirakuji" [this is a town within Kyoto known as Nijo tamaya cho; the publisher was Kanbee Murakami, and his shop's name was Heirakuji], "1632" & "1634" [the final leaf gives these two dates based on the zodiac]. Second edition to be published in Japan, printed in Chinese with Japanese reading marks. This is a very rare book, and we find no copy in WorldCat. Kawase records an extremely rare gozan ban edition printed in 1283 at one of the five temples at Kamakura. These lectures, delivered at the monasteries of Longxingsi and Kaiyuansi by the Chan master Huangbo Xiyun (d. 850), were recorded by Pei Xiu (787?-860), the powerful Tang dynasty minister of state.
