The work was translated by ibn Tibbon between the years of 1161-1180. Bahya ben Joseph ibn Paquda was a Jewish philosopher and rabbi who lived at Zaragoza, Al-Andalus (now Spain) in the first half of the eleventh century. " Rav Hayim Palachi (1788- 1868) was the chief rabbi of Izmir. He was personally appointed to the post by the Ottoman Sultan Abdulmacid. He wrote extensively in Ladino and Hebrew and was highly honored by the sultan and Muslim authories in Istanbul. He was "considered the 'Haham Bashi' of Izmir in the middle of the 19th century, and founder of the 'Beit Hillel' Synagogue and beit madras (study hall) . He was very knowledgeable, and received letters from all over the world with questions about Halacha. He wrote 82 books addressing important issues in Jewish life.
