Description:
The oval albumen bust length image of Gotthelf Pach is mounted to a tan board, in the center, and Pach has inscribed and signed underneath his image, "With best wishes, Sincerely, Gotthelf Pach..." The name of the person to whom Pach gave this fine image is written to the left. The photography studio's well known stamp, "Pach Bros.," is printed in the lower right corner of the tan board. In upper right corner and on verso is docketing in pencil in various hands with one notation on verso indicating the image is "possibly unique." Some residue from previous mounting on back, lower right corner shows a crack crossing the Pach Bros. insignia. Image and board are in fine condition except for unexceptional wear to the board's corners. Autograph

Description:
To Mr. E. Fasquelle, editor, Pagnol writes about film. "I had two parts in my film. One, where I had my characters speak. The other, where I left that to the cinematography and to Honnegger's [sic] music. The musical segments are very boring, I am told. I am in the process of cutting out as many as I can but it is a delicate thing because of Honnegger [sic], who is a charming lad...." He signs in full, "Marcel Pagnol," then adds a note about having received payment. Pagnol most likely refers to his 1937 film "Regain" ("Harvest,") for which Swiss composer Arthur Honegger composed the music. The Marius trilogy (Marius, Fanny and Cesar), filmed between 1931 and 1936, are viewed as Pagnol's most important cinematic contribution. Autograph

Description:
Linus Pauling sketched his superconductivity invention. SIGNED by Emile Zuckerhandl, biologist. Pauling is generally associated with chemistry, Vitamin C, and peace. He also had a keen interest in superconductors. In our sketch, drawn in 1989, Pauling illustrates his new technique on superconductivity for biologist Emile Zuckerhandl. Zuckerhandl (1922-2013), a founder of molecular evolution, worked with Pauling to develop the molecular clock hypothesis. Writing in pencil, Zuckerhandl described the sketch on the lower right corner of the page. "2/4/89 LP [Linus Pauling] explains to me a new technique he wants to use in his research on superconductivity, to prepare extremely thin metal fibers (lead in gold)." Pauling wrote "Rolling Mill" under his sketch. On his professional stationery, Zuckerhandl wrote an explanation of the drawing for David Schulson who purchased it in 1994. "About Linus Pauling's little sketch, I wrote on it the following words..." The words are the same as the description already…

Description:
Peale is likely writing to John Durand (1822-1908), painter and son of artist Asher B. Durand. John Durand co-founded a cultural and art periodical called, "The Crayon," published from Jan 3, 1855 to July 1861. Peale writes, "After you left me this morning it occurred to me that possibly in your next number you would give a few words on the Exhibition here - In this case you might say that it contained nothing from my pencil, & that I preferred to send a portrait, my last work in my 80th Year, to the New York Academy.... which I have done - That of a Young Man." Nicely signed, "Rembrandt Peale." The painting's title refers to his, "Portrait of a Young Man." Peale had settled in Philadelphia by the time he wrote this letter, and that city is likely the place to which he refers regarding the Exhibition. Earlier in the year of our letter, 1857, Peale made prints that he called "Monochrome of Washington." When he lectured at the New York Historical Society on June 16, he displayed Washington portraits…

Description:
Rare Photography Advertising Broadside for a Parisian photography studio operated by Allophones Lionel who was active in the 1860s (according to Getty Images). Lionel advertises a guarantee that no photographer had offered: a proof - "epreuve" - of the image before the photograph is printed, and if the client does not like the image, the photographer will take a second photograph and offer a second proof for no additional charge. A caricature of the famed French photographer Nadar appears to sit on a camera in the broadside's highly decorative design. The sheet measures 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches and is normally aged with slight chip in upper left corner, else very good condition. Photographs of individuals in the carte-de-vi site style established in the 1850's became more popular in the 1860's with many photographers competing for clients. This richly designed broadside must have appealed to new customers. We have not found another example of this broadside. Autograph

Description:
Artist Pound seeks information about the British modernist poet and family friend, Basil Bunting. She writes to the editor of the New English Weekly, Philip Mairet. "Can anyone send news of Basil Bunting? Considered by a small, determined but highly competent group of leaders to be the most interesting Eng. poet of the late 1920s or early ‘30s - Quaker - conscientious objector in first world war, said by the Chicago ‘Poetry' to have been doing ground work in air-force, last seen according to rumour on a Trawler...." Signed, "Dorothy Pound." Bunting and Pound became friends and colleagues. When she wrote this letter, Dorothy Pound had already moved to Washington, D. C. to be near her husband, famed poet Ezra Pound. He was incarcerated in St. Elizabeth's mental hospital in Washington, D. C. after having been indicted for treasonous activities against the United States including support for Mussolini's fascist regime. Autograph
