Unlike other titles in the Lakeside Classics series, Quaife created the present volume to mark the centennial of the 1849 California Gold Rush with "a considerable number of selections from various sources, chosen with the view of providing a somewhat general conspectus of the entire Gold Rush." Includes accounts from Hinton Helper, J.D. Borthwick, Bayard Taylor, Walter Colton, Dame Shirley, Daniel B. Woods, and Alonzo Delano. Kurutz describes these as "several of [the Gold Rush's] finest observers," and also compliments the quality of Quaife's historical introduction. Extracts from the yearly meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as the Quakers, containing highlights of the meeting. This collection of statutes covers a very broad range, both explicit restrictions on Quakers and many more subtle ones, including acts for encouraging the growth of coffee in the American colonies, and others relative to colonial finances, e.g. "An Act for the more easy Recovery of Debts in his Majesty's Plantations and Colonies in America..." in which Quakers are treated differently under the law. An interesting sammelband, consisting of twenty-nine tracts published variously between 1821 and 1834, all relating in one way or another to the Society of Friends, and bound in a matching set of two volumes. The volumes, and many of the bound-in pamphlets, bear the handwritten signature of "Wm Procter," and each volume of texts is preceded by a table of contents written in ink in the same hand. Some pamphlets also note the year Procter acquired them. The compiler of these two volumes was almost certainly William Procter (1780-1860) of Baltimore, Maryland. Catalog of bookseller Bernard Quaritch. THE MUSEUM was published monthly, and was also available by annual subscription. This September 1859 list is no. 151, which includes descriptions of many notable works, among them the Aldrovandi OPERA OMNIA, Lewis and Clark's TRAVELS FROM ST. LOUIS TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, 1804-1806, and a 15th-century illuminated Petrarch manuscript.

A work important in Canadian constitutional history and for the beginnings of the British regime in Canada. The text includes: "New Commission of the Governor of the Province of Quebec" (George III to Guy Carleton), "Former Commission of Captain General, &c. of Quebec" (George III to James Murray), "King's Proclamation" (of Oct. 7, 1763), "Commission of Vice-Admiral" (George III to James Murray), "Abstract of the Quebec Act," "Commission to the Captain General and Governor New York" (1754 appointment of Sir Danvers Osborn as captain-general and governor-in-chief of the Province of New York), and the first and second charters granted by King Charles II to the Lords Proprietors of Carolina. The second edition of REMINISCENCES OF QUEBEC..., "considerably augmented and improved," first published in 1858. The present copy has a wrapper dated 1862. The content is identical to that of the 1859 edition, and this issue presumably simply used new wrappers. Most of the pamphlet is given over to a general, tourist-oriented description of the city. The second part, with the caption title "Siege of Quebec in 1759. Translated from the French. Narrative of the doings during the Siege of Quebec...by a Nun of the General Hospital of Quebec...," is a translation of a text first published in 1840 and which appeared with differing pagination in the 1858 edition (this edition is also listed separately by Sabin as 80871). The second edition, with a printing of only 3,000 copies. The title translates as: "The inquiry, questions illustrating the meaning of the Holy Scriptures. A good thing for Sunday Schools. Book I. About the story of Jesus and his miracles." This copy is from the library of James F. Hunnewell (1832-1910), with his bookplate. Hunnewell was a Boston book collector and bibliographer. He published BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS in 1869. His father, James Hunnewell, became familiar with the islands when the ship he was on was sold to Hawaiian chiefs. The senior Hunnewell was responsible for collecting the payment in sandalwood and then selling it in China. The OXFORD COMPANION TO SPANISH LITERATURE calls Quevedo y Villegas "one of the greatest and most prolific writers that Spain has produced." Vehement speech by Massachusetts Congressman Josiah Quincy III, opposing Louisiana's entry into the Union. In his speech, Quincy declares that "if this bill passes [to allow Louisiana into the Union], the bonds of this union are virtually dissolved; that the states which compose it are free from their moral obligations, and that as it will be the right of all, so it will be the duty of some to prepare, definitely, for a separation; amicably, if they can, violently, if they must." Quincy objects to the admission of any new states into the Union by an expansion of U.S. territory, interpreting the Constitution to mean that new states may be admitted only within the current boundaries of the country. Boston: Printed by Russell & Cutle, 1806. 22pp. Half title. Printed self-wrappers, stitched. Very good, untrimmed. A speech emphasizing the importance of military preparedness in coastal cities. Quincy, a congressman from Massachusetts, admonishes the House to take the issue seriously after jokes were made preceding his speech: "It may be sport to you, gentlemen, but it is death to us" (pp.5-6). Boston: J. H. Eastburn, 1850. 41pp. Original printed wrappers. Minor dust-soiling to wrappers, light chipping to spine ends, contemporary gift inscription to top of front wrapper. Very good. President Taylor died in office just sixteen months into his presidency, less than a week after ingesting raw fruit and iced milk that seemed to introduce or encourage a mysterious intestinal ailment. The author of the present eulogy was a former mayor of Boston, and scion of the famous Boston Quincy family. Not in Howes. SABIN 67263
