Description:
8vo, pamphlet, removed, dbd, 14 pp. Maybe lacking wrappers, but otherwise complete, number stamped on title, ink number on title, normal aging and foxing; otherwise very good.
Scarce, early railroad title that reports on the completion of a railroad between Reading and Norristown, and the construction of a railroad between Norristown and Philadelphia. The report indicates that the amount of freight shipped at that point was not significant, but they expected a significant increase with the completion of the next part of the railroad. Information on costs and revenues are provided, as well as estimates on the cost of transporting coal to Philadelphia from the coal regions.

Description:
Large 8vo, pamphlet, half title, stitched, 27 pp. Half title instead of formal title page, somewhat uncut, dbd, some tears at edges, mild aging and toning; very good. This appears to be part of a House document (House No. 32) dated February 27, 1839, and presented by William Lincoln. The pamphlet discusses the financial challenges dating back to the late 18th century, which prevented the development of transportation systems. While the title suggests a western theme, much of the discussion is closer to the original colonies. The author makes a case for rail and other transportation systems by pointing out the benefits of these efforts on real and personal property values. He uses the favorable impact the Erie Canal had on property in New York. It appears that after careful consideration, the House Committee voted in favor of the proposal to spend the money ($1,200,000) on the development of the 'so called ' Western Rail-road'.

4to (11 ½ x8 ¾) original law calf morocco illustrated, [4], 134, 85,102, 114, [2], iv, 64 pp. Some scuffing and wear to covers, slight gouge to front joint, chipping to edges. Two plates detached, one with a chipped corner. Overall very good. Organized by the War department under the direction of Jefferson Davis, who was Secretary of War at that time, a collection of volumes was produced in the quest for the best route for a railroad to the West. Jefferson Davis wrote part of the introduction to this series and outlines the goals of the project. This report is on routes explored in Northern California and Oregon. Specifically, the expedition was to look for a railroad route crossing the Sierra Nevada near the source of the Carson River, and to see if it was feasible to connect the Sacramento valley with the Oregon Territory. Most of the color plates in this volume are located in the first three parts of the publication, which is focused on topography, geology, and botanical subjects.… Read More

Description:
8vo, pamphlet, removed, dbd, 31 pp. Some minor foxing and aging; otherwise very good. Interesting early railroad report to shareholders that provides considerable useful historical information, including railroad construction costs and description and costs of engines and pessanger cars. While the title suggests a westward theme, much of the construction is along the Connecticut River. Also, the schedule of distances in the report seems to focus on Massachusetts and the greater Boston area.

Description:
Folding train schedule, (4 1/2x 9), 20 panels, large folding map in color. Some browning and aging, some separation at the middle fold, two of those separations are a few inches, three other smaller tears at the middle fold, these are repairable, a few chips and tears at edge folds. Nice piece of railroad memorabilia, with substantial information about rates and schedules. Most of the trains are geared toward the west, which gives an idea on the process of opening up this still relatively new part of the country. The map has its flaws, but it is sound enough to get a feel for the lines of the Union Pacific.

Description:
Pamphlet 8vo disbound 24 pp. Trimmed along the right edge with minor loss on each page. Small square section cut away from bottom margin along gutter with minimal loss. Toned, minor foxing, and with ex-library embossed stamp on terminal leaf. A few other minor chips and tears. Published in 1831 this represents a very early American railroad piece. While the pamphlet talks about developing a railroad from Pottsville to Sunbury and Danville to develop coal markets, other routes are also discussed, including one from Schuylkill to the Susquehanna valley. Because this is early on in railroad development in the United States, some general economic considerations are discussed. For example, the pamphlet points out that the advantage to railroads when large volumes of product are shipped. Compared to barge or boat transport, railroads are 1/3 cheaper. It, also points out the difficulties of transport in winter by traditional means. It even mentions some benefits of railroad to traveling, but much of the… Read More

Illustrated with 20 (of 21) color lithographs, several steel engraved charts and shell engravings, and three color lithographed folding maps. Table of contents list 20 color plates, but some copies seem to have twenty-one. Two of the folding maps/charts have been placed in a rear endpaper pocket; one has a neat repair. A little rubbing to cloth, and some minor darkening within. Could be missing one plate. Overall, very good and nicely restored. One of the great sources of information on the west, the Pacific Railroad Reports also contains some great illustrations. This installment (Vol. III) is no exception. Somewhat typical report to shareholders, but this was published a year after the railroad was founded. The company actually shows a surplus of funds, and there is a very positive tone concerning future prospects and railroad construction. Interestingly, the company points to problems facing other companies who had to borrow money at very high fixed interest rates to to develop their business. Sabin 60358.

Description:
Large thick 4to, contemporary calf spine and tips with marbled boards, 70 very attractive color lithograph plates, 358, [41] pp. Extremeties worn, minor aging, one map has tear in lower corner, plates bright and clean. The Pacific Railroad Surveys (1853-1855) explored possible routes for a transcontinental railroad. However, the surveys went beyond looking for a place for a railroad, they included and incredible amount of information on natural history and the peoples that inhabited the areas where the surveys explored. Representing the first part of the final volume of these surveys, this installment focused on the northern route for a railroad. The 12 volumes included in these surveys is also known for rich illustrations, many of which were in color. With 70 color plates (one folding) and three folding maps in Volume XII (part 1), this edition is particularly rich in illustration, and the plates are bright and clean.

Large thick folio (15x10 1/2), bound in soft tan calf, maroon morocco corners and spine label, marbled endpapers, [26], 425 + 111 (blank) pp. Hinges reinforced with cloth, front joint split, leather chipped at spine ends and corners are a bit worn, light rubbing, and finger soiling to contents; else very good. Fascinating piece of railroad memorabilia that documents railroad company mergers, deeds for track expansion, and other contractual correspondence dated from 1839-1915, chiefly between Massachusetts and New York. Many of the transactions mention concern the Boston and Albany Railroad, connecting Boston to Albany. The ledger appears to record events from the original documents. Sometimes it cites the individual who copied the document. While the the dates of documents it refers to go back to the before the mid 19th century, these entries were probably done in the late 19th century or early 20th century. Library stamp on back of title page, some soiling to wrappers, corners nicked, and a slight vertical crease. Otherwise, very good. Scarce pamphlet offering a view of the building of the transcontinental railroad and some of the challenges it faced, including those related to the crossing the Sierra Nevada. The map shows most of the U.S. (excluding the southern fringe) with the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads connecting just north of Salt Lake City. The map also shows the proposed Southern Pacific Railroad from St. Louis to Southern California. The pamphlet talks about the need for the railroad because of the gold discoveries and the unlimited agricultural potential of the region. The Philadelphia and Reading represents one of the nation's oldest railroads, with its roots going back to 1832. The Atlantic and Great Western is a railroad that would merge and morph several times, and become the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad. The present agreement is actually between several railroad companies, and the goal appears to be to share rail and transport to Philadelphia.

Pamphlet with original pictorial wrappers in cloth case. 32 pp. Illustration on back wrapper. Pamphlet is disbound. Front wrapper has chips and tears along edge, but not affecting text. Back wrapper has long tear below the image. Contemporary account of the riot at the Astor Place Opera House that claimed the lives of 22 people and wounded 36 others. The major factor in the riot was the rivalry and quarrels between the well-known American actor Edwin Forrest, and the English actor William C. Macready. Some anti-British and class prejudice also played a part in this incident. Forrest and Macready had been openly feuding, and some felt the American was treated badly by Macready while he was on tour in Europe. Their quarrels spilled over into the press, and on May 7th Macready’s performance at the Astor Place Opera House had to be aborted because of a hostile audience. While Macready wanted to end his engagement he was persuaded by several prominent New Yorkers, including Washington Irving, to… Read More
