Portrait. 4 volumes 8vo (7 x 4 1/2 inches), contemporary grained calf backed marbled boards, spines decorated in gilt and lettered direct, top edge gilt, others uncut; small rub mark at the base of spine of volume 3 else very good indeed.

Paris: Garnier, Freres, [ 1908 ]. First edition. 50 coloured plates. Oblong 4to (12 1/4 x 9 inches), original red cloth, the upper cover pictorially blocked in gilt and colours, all edges gilt. Some rubbing to headbands and corners. Front free endpaper creased. The gilt of the final "R" of Rabier rubbed, a few minor scuffs but overall this is an exceptional copy of the rare 1st edition.

Paris: Flammarion, c. 1920. 3 volumes 8vo (7 x 4 3/4 inches), pages: 314, 321, & 337. Contemporary maroon calf backed marbled boards. Spines gilt within raised bands. Spines faded and partly discoloured; the bindings very strong however.

London: John Murray, 1926. 2nd edition. Plates. 8vo (9 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches), 494-pages. Original blue cloth blocked in gilt. Very mild bruising to headbands, overall a very nice copy indeed. Near contemporary gift inscription on front free endpaper.

Trischler & Co. London, 1891. Chromolitho. frontispice, chromolitho. plates and sepia illustrations in the text. Oblong 8vo (9 1/8 x 7 inches), 67-pages. Original brown cloth pictorially blocked in gilt. Binding a little dulled, 2 plates detached, one being chipped on blank fore-margin.

London: Saunders, Otley, 1861. First edition. 8vo (8 x 5 inches), 361-pages plus 8-pages of publisher's advertisements at end. Original plum grained cloth. Binding very faded and marked, headbands a little frayed, corners bumped. Joints slightly cracked but firm, some soiling within. A relatively poor copy of a rare novel.

C.W. Faulkner, [1919]. 13 (of 15? ) coloured plates; one colour plate detached and ragged, other plates good. Paper covering of upper cover detached, applied illustration still present but poor. May be useful in making a better incomplete copy of this rare work complete?

The volume containing specifications of the work to be undertaken, manuscript notes, calculations and specifications and also, on stout paper, many fine large folding drawings in pen & ink and watercolour of the W. door of South School, Brompton Barracks, a drainage system, a floor design, house design, a hutment scheme, and a steel bridge design, etc. Many marked with the examiner’s notes and comments in red ink. Folio, contemporary full blue morocco lettered in gilt on upper cover, “Fowke Medal 1910. R. E. 2nd Lieutenant J.W.J. Raikes R.E.” The Fowke medal awarded to the top student of the Clerk of Works course. Francis Fowke (1823-1865) the architect of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and a Captain in the Corps of Royal Engineers.

Engraved map on card (5 1/2 x 4 inches). With an engraved description to the reverse dated February 1837. Rare.

Virtue, London, [ 1866-1868]. Engraved title vignette portrait and numerous steel engaved plates. Six volumes (or Divisions) 4to (11 1/8 x 8 3/4 inches), original brown blindstamped cloth pictorially blocked in gilt. Backstip of vol.5 rubbed and faded, a few headbands bruised, two plates detached but undamaged. Some slight variation in the tone of the cloth of the bindings. Overall a very good set and very clean internally. Weight 5.5 kg thus extra postage will be requested.

Charles Knight, London, 1846. Illustrations. Small 8vo (6 x 3 3/4 inches), pages: iii:236. The second work viii:220, published by Knight in 1845. Two works bound in one volume. Contemporary half crimson calf, marbled boards. Spine blocked in gilt and lettered vertically in gilt direct, all edges marbled. An excellent copy, very clean internally and attractively bound, joints rubbed else in very good condition.

Fairbairn & Anderson, Edinburgh, 1819. Engraved title vignette. 12mo ( 5 1/4 x 3 1/8 inches), pages: xxxii:400. Contemporary full tan calf, sides ruled in gilt, spine gilt and blocked in blind, with burgundy lettering piece. Very good.

Birmingham: Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1871. 16 plates, 8vo, pp.63, original printed tan wrappers; backstrip dusty, insect damage to margin of last two leaves and lower wrapper, top of text block dusty; the wrappers very clean. The other papers being Description of a Balanced Slide-Valve for Locomotive Engines by William G. Beattie; & On Whittle's plan for preventing Deposit and Incrustation in Steam Boilers by George Addenbrooke.

Birmingham: Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1849. 8vo, pp.39, original printed tan wrappers; backstrip & extreme inner margins discoloured, text block detached from wrappers. The other papers are On the Expansive Action of Steam, and a new construction of Expansion Valves for Condensing Engines by William Fairbairn; & On the system of Ventilation in the Wallsend Colliery by David Burn.
