French Renaissance writer and humanist Francois Rabelais is widely considered one of the greatest wirters in world literature and among the creators of modern European writing. His literary legacy is such that today, the word Rabelaisian has been coined as a descriptive inspired by his work and life. Merriam-Webster defines the word as describing someone or something that is "marked by gross robust humor, extravagance of caricature, or bold naturalism".

An attractive set. One of the great writers of world literature, François Rabelais is considered among the creators of modern European writing (Bahtin, 1984). His most renowned work is Gargantua and Pantagruel, and its satire and scatalogical humor of this time of censorship and increasing religious oppression have won Rabelais consideration as "....the greatest writer in the French language" (Le Clézio, 2008). The French novelist Honoré de Balzac was directly inspired by Rabelais to write his Les Cent Contes Drolatiques, and he quotes Rabelais lavishly in his La Comédie humaine (Brix, 2005).

Folio, six volumes bound in full buckram with gilt titles to the spine, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, illustrated with 500 plates including 300 chromolithographic plates in color decorated with gold and silver and 200 in monochrome. In near fine condition. One of the most complete and extensive studies of on the history of clothing ever produced, Auguste Racinet's monumental Le Costume Historique remains an important publication in the history of French printing, particularly for its use of chromolithography which granted its plates with a unique and lasting brilliance.

The recipient, Jack Warner, was the co-founder, president, and driving force behind the Warner Bros. Studios. His career spanned some 45 years, its duration surpassing that of any other of the seminal Hollywood studio moguls. Rand sold the film rights to Warner several years earlier with the contractual proviso that she would provide the screenplay, which would be unalterable. In fact, the director wanted changes, but Warner supported the author and honored the contract.
