Description:
London, 1745. Mezzotint. Printed on laid paper. In fair condition with the exception of being trimmed within the plate mark on all sides. Edges of sheet have been remargined. Image is slightly rubbed. Image size: 12 3/8 x 9 7/8 inches. A fine quality mezzotint portrait of Thomas Wentworth, Commander in Chief of the British forces in America. An excellent image by Alexander Van Haecken, younger brother of Joseph Van Haecken (Van Aken) who worked for some time as Ramsay's studio assistant, specialising in drapery. Ramsay, son of the poet of the same name, achieved a great level of success as a portrait painter, but after his appointment in 1767 as portrait painter to the King, he became, for a while, the most fashionable of them all. The present work is a print from one of the earlier works done before he received the royal seal of approval. Not in O'Donoghue.

Description:
London, 1686. [2], 26pp. Disbound. Contemporary notations and stains to titlepage. Moderate wear and foxing. Irregularly trimmed, shaving a few letters in the foredge of leaf C4. First printed in 1686 in two editions, the present London edition and an edition in Oxford. Blackmer argues that the Oxford edition should have precedence, though both editions are scarce, and this London edition is known in fewer copies. This London edition includes a description of Cerigo, not found in the Oxford edition. Randolph's description of the Morea, also known as the Peloponnesus, is a valuable account of southern mainland Greece, based on his own firsthand observations while a merchant there. He describes several important port cities, their attributes, suitability for commerce, and the quality of life there for the Greek and Turkish residents. "By 1664 he was living in Smyrna and he traded extensively through the Aegean region of the Ottoman empire until after 1680. Between 1683 and 1684 he travelled three…

Rome: Domenico de' Rossi, 1693. Large folio. 10 hand-coloured engraved plates by Dorigny on laid paper (each 15 7/8 x 26 inches approximately), titles and imprints printed in gold, black ink-ruled borders, each plate cut to the edge of the image, mounted on large sheets of contemporary thick laid paper (each 29 3/8 x 40 3/8 inches approximately). Unbound A very fine suite of richly hand-coloured plates offering a stunning visual record of one of the best of the decorative interior schemes carried out by Raphael in Rome. This wonderful series records Raphael's 'Cupid and Psyche' series of frescoes, carried out by him between 1516 and 1518 in the Loggia of Psyche in the villa Farnesina in Rome. The series also comes with a title and an eleventh plate of the ceiling fresco in the adjoining Sala di Galatea, executed in 1512: neither the plate nor the title are present here. Originally published by the Rossis, the engravings are the work of Nicolas Dorigny (1658-1746) who lived and worked in Rome…

The finest illustrated book on Afghanistan and an important color plate book issued in the early days of the "Great Game," in a magnificent contemporary morocco binding. Rattray, who served with the 2nd Grenadiers, Bengal Army, during the conflict, took great pains to note specific details of dress and local customs of the Afghani soldiers and statesmen with whom he came into contact. He held the Afghan landscape, costume, and architecture in high esteem and…

Edinburgh & London, 1869. Hand-coloured lithograph J. D. Carmichael. Sheet size: 21 5/8 x 16 inches. A very fine plate from Ravenscroft's 'The Pinetum Britannicum. A Descriptive Account of Hardy Coniferous Trees' Ravenscroft's work is the third (in order of publication) of the three great coniferous iconographies of the nineteenth century, following Bedford and Lambert. The very fine plates fall into two categories: botanical studies of details of the needles and fruit of the individual trees, and landscape studies of examples of individual trees in their natural habitat. This plate is an outstanding example of the former group, here drawn by Greville and lithographed by J.D. Carmichael. Cf. Nissen BBI 1588; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p.127; cf. Paris: Pierre-François Didot, 1792. 4 parts in one volume, folio. (20 1/8 x 14 1/8 inches). (4) 36pp., 35 plain engraved plates (including 15 bis), of which 22 are by Redouté and 10 are by Sowerby. Contemporary blue paper boards, rebacked with brown calf preserving original spine. L'Heritier, a wealthy French nobleman and botanist, published a number of important specimen books in the 1780's, illustrating exotic plants found in Europe. In the process he launched the career of Redouté by publishing his illustrations and by introducing him to the highest levels of Parisian society. In addition he instructed Redouté in plant anatomy, the techniques of dissection, and made his large collection of books and specimens available to the young artist. While L'Heritier advised Redouté in the appropriate details necessary for correct botanical drawings, the Dutch flower painter, Gerrit van Spaendonck, encouraged the young artist's talents by teaching him the techniques for capturing variations in tone and…
