New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1938. First Edition. Limited Issue, one of 1,000 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy no.492. Octavo (21.25cm); light gray linen, with titles stamped in blue on spine and front cover; blue-violet topstain; dustjacket; [xii],466,[4]pp. Light offsetting to endpapers, else Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $2.75), with some pinpoint wear to corners and spine ends. Stunning copy of the Massachusetts author's second novel. "Ostensibly an account of the Boston police strike of 1922, this is actually a Gothic novel in which murder, rape, robberty, flogging, and sexual titillation run wild. By the end of the novel all the major characters have died violently and Armageddon seems to have arrived on the streets of Boston. The policemen's strike releases all restraints and criminals and respectable Bostonians alike become an uncontrolled mob bent on pillage and murder" (BLAKE, p.265). Uncommon in the trade. HANNA 1406.

Loose, as issued, with no enclosing envelope. Printed in different color inks on various cardstocks; each with imprint on verso. Together comprising Issues No. 1 & 2 of Merlyn Gorky, a short-lived radical left literary-political journal (there appear to have been only two numbers issued) edited by the feminist poet Susu Jeffrey. The newspaper has a few nicks at the fold; toning to the interior pages; Very Good+. Fourteen of the cards are signed (a few with inscriptions; two dated May-June 1981). Complete and fine. Of particular note is the signed contribution by "Pancho Aguila" - this was the prison pseudonym of notorious poet/criminal Roberto Solis, convicted of murder in an armored car heist in 1969, released in 1992, and currently (2018) a fugitive from justice, wanted in connection with a $3-million… Read More

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1913. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (19.5cm); dark blue cloth, blocked and titled in burgundy and gilt on spine and front cover; viii, 448, [8]pp ads. Neat, contemporary owner's name and date to front endpaper (a "Dr. L.W. Truman"). Mild external wear, with light rubbing to corners and spine ends; hinges very lightly pulled; a clean and unmarked copy, easily Very Good. Among the more nuanced Socialist novels of the 'teens and, according to Rideout, one of the first serious portrayals of the I.W.W. in American fiction. The book is also noteworthy for offering a woman protagonist who, in contrast to the formulaic society-girl-turned-socialist so common to the radical "conversion" novels of the period, is here a sweatshop worker who must do battle with her instinctive militancy (which initially attracts her to the IWW) to finally join the Socialist Party. Description:
New York: Mitchell Kennerly, 1909 [but later]. Original red cloth boards, lettered in white on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 329pp. Tight, Near Fine copy in slightly soiled dustwrapper. Dates on title page and copyright match (1909), however, jacket states "Third Edition." Harris's only foray into "proletarian" fiction--a novel set among the anarchist victims of the events surrounding Chicago's Haymarket Square bombing of 1886. Published by Kennerley in 1909 and reissued by Harris in the Twenties; it is unclear whether the current issue is in fact from a third re-setting of the text, or simply a remainder with a new dustwrapper. We note that the jacket sits about 1/16" short for the book, but we offer it as received.
