A nice, collectible copy of an early printing with the original design for the front cover and spine of the dust jacket. Size: 7.5"-8" - Small Octavo (Sm. 8vo). 870 pages. Text block is tight and unmarked, though the pages have toned with age. Bound in dark blue cloth with a diagonal pattern with starts embossed on the cover and spine and an eagle stamped in bright gilt on the front cover and title in bright gilt on the spine. I would rate this Near Fine, but there is a small (about a quarter inch) cut at the head of the spine (not affecting the title). The unclipped ($2.50) dust jacket (No. 2539-37) has shallow chips at the head and fot of the folds and some small (about a quarter inch) tears at the foot of the spine. The colors N.C. Wyeth's paintings on the front and rear panels are bright. However, there are some…

Description:
Doubleday, Doran & Company, Garden City, NY, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good+ Condition/Good. Illustrator: Robert B. Haberstock. Book A collection of 19 essays, including the title essay in which Roberts criticizes the Pulitzer Prize Committee for awarding the prize intended for novels dealing with American life and standards to works that lacked an American context. According to Jack Bales (1993), these essays had been rewritten for this book from originals published in the Saturday Evening Post (p. 64). According to reports, the book sold poorly with only 5,603 copies printed, which Roberts attributed to the title (Bales, p. 141n27). Thirteen of these essays were included in the later collection, The Kenneth Roberts Reader. The linecut illustrations are by Robert B. Haberstock, who designed a number of book dust jackets from the 1930s into the 1950s. Note: I have a large selection of Kenneth Roberts books and related materials. Contact me if you are looking for…

Description:
Doubleday, Doran & Company, Garden City, NY, 1945. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good-. Book A well-preserved copy of a collection of 26 essays and chapters from Roberts' books. According to Jack Bales (1993), this book resulted from Roberts' disappointment with the collection published ten years prior as For Authors Only, which he thought sold poorly because of the title. Bales notes Roberts "wanted Doubleday to bring out a new edition under a different title," but the publisher deemed that unethical (p. 141n27). As a result, this Reader picks up 13 of the 19 essays in For Authors Only (five of which are renamed, as noted in the headings) and adds 13 more, largely chapters from his novels. Note: I have a large selection of Kenneth Roberts books and related materials. Contact me if you are looking for something in particular. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 460 pages. Item Type: Book.
