Usually found with severe rubbing to the spine, this copy has virtually no wear but the slightest rubbing to the spine tips.

Saint-Exupery is best known, of course, for writing THE LITTLE PRINCE. Usually found without the slipcase and with severe rubbing to the spine, this copy has no rubbing to the spine but does have some minor chipping to the spine tips and some soiling to the covers. What appears to be original glassine protects the book. Of the thirty or so copies we have seen or handled over the years, this is the first we have encountered with a glassine cover.

Quarto (7-1/8" x 9-1/4") bound in contemporary calf with modern sympathetic and expert restoration at the spine and corners, one original brass clasp with remains of the other; gilt-lettered red morocco spine label. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Salmon; [xx], 762, [14] pages. Of the first edition of 1681, Wing S432 notes only one location. The reason for this might be found in the Preface which states that the work is to be issued in weekly parts. Copy #9 of only 50 SIGNED by both the poet and the photographer. Though one frequently sees one of the edition of 195 unsigned copies with a photographic reproduction in orange boards, this issue of the book, signed and with the original photograph, is quite scarce.

Later printing of the First Trade Edition of this autobiography but with a fine INSCRIPTION by Sandburg on the half-title page: "For Harold Taylor/our good friend who has/heard but not read the cen-/sored & omitted portions of/this book = in fellowship =" and SIGNED by the poet in 1956.

INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the poet beneath the limitation: "Dick + Florence/ever + always/Carl."

Illustrated with 60 halftones from photos, and 98 drawings, maps, and sketches. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For Henrik Van Loon/as between scribblers/and herewith admiration/and affection--/Carl Sandburg/1942." Sandburg has also drawn an arrow to Van Loon's first name and added "Henrick Hudson told me to leave the d out." Hendrik Van Loon was a Dutch-American historian, journalist, and children's book author. Among his many books, which he often also illustrated, is THE STORY OF MANKIND, a history of the world intended for children, which won the first Newbery Medal in 1922.
