Description:
New York, NY: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1948. First Edition SIGNED by Author. Octavo. pp. vi, 1067. In publisher's black cloth with gilt titles to spine, and with original pictorial dust jacket. Colourful bucolic scene featuring mountains, village, villagers and natives. Top edge brown. Black ink signature to front free end paper. Text block clean and crisp, though some staining to edge. Binding worn slightly to edges. Jacket clean and bright, though with some chipping and cracking to top cm of spine. Very good overall - an attractive copy. Sandburg's only novel, 'Remembrance Rock' has been compared to 'War and Peace' in its scope and ambiguity of classification. Many would say it is not a novel at all. Tracking several generations of the same family from the American War of Independence through to the Second World War, the narrative develops grand historical and political concerns.

Tinted edge sunned, price clipped, small tear to dust-jacket spine, toning to dust-jacket. Very good. The blurb says that this book 'is a study of what the author believes to be an essential part of the make-up of every good woman, a wish to be bad.' The story's protagonist, Sandra Lee, whose marriage is looming, is currently only concerned with a Christmas party. Most of the book is set in the unpredictable environment of this party where anything could, and does, happen.
