Lower corner of the front board is stained in addition to some spot staining to the rear cover; moderate to heavy foxing throughout; folding frontispiece is crisp. "Saissy described a Eustachian bougie; he was probably the first to use this instrument. Besides dealing with the labyrinth, this book discusses diseases of the tympanum and Eustachian tube" Garrison and Morton 3365.

General edgewear to the binding including some fraying at the corners and spine ends; bit of staining to the rear board, still, the book presents very well; scattered and occasional tideline to the fore-edge margin of some leaves; scattered early pencil checks marks and brief notes in the margins, pretty minimal. A fairly nice copy of an uncommon county history.

In publisher's cloth; numerous plates throughout. Light edgewear to the binding; a bit of silverfishing to the front cover, still, the book presents very well. A very nice copy of an uncommon county history, here with an authorial inscription.

A few points of pressure damage on the front cover, otherwise a nearly fine copy; dust jacket has a couple closed tears, one at the bottom of the front fold and another at the bottom of the rear panel near the joint; additionally some subtle damage at the same place where the front board is damaged--given the image on the front cover it is difficult to see this damage making it quite a presentable copy in spite of it. Profusely illustrated with a wonderful collection of 19th and early 20th century photographs of the Virginia capitol.

Rear wrapper has several creases to the top corner from folding; covers lightly soiled; spine a bit worn; a small chip to the fore-edge margin of the final leaf, no affecting text; all in all a well preserved copy. The trial of the Boorns "is one of the most famous cases in Ameircan criminal law and a constant reminder that innocent persons can be convicted. Russell Colvin, the alleged victim, had married a sister of the Boorns and had several children by her. He was mentally deficient and disappeared in 1812. Local gossip credited the Boorns with having disposed of him, prsumably because he was a burden on the family. Spine is desiccated and the leather at the joints is separated but the cords are tentatively holding; spine label is gone. Previous owner name on the preliminary blanks; textblock is toned throughout. The four folding, hand-colored plates are present with only minor closed tears at the intersection of the folds. "Saunders was the first to describe paracentesis in acute middle-ear suppuration" Garrison & Morton 3362.

Boards are rubbed exposing the scaleboard underneath in a few places; despite the missing spine the binding is fairly stable. Internally a very good copy. The first edition of Schaffer's pharmaceutical work is scarce in commerce and OCLC locates about a dozen copies in institutional holdings, all in Europe. A nice engraved title page vignette showing an apothecary's apparatus, engraved by Stephan Luibel of Regensburg.
